A woman who purchased a plot of land to set-up a dream business was shocked to discover a $500,000 house was mistakenly built on her lot.
Annaleine 'Anne' Reynolds purchased a one-acre lot in Hawaii's Paradise Park for around $22,500 in 2018.
Reynolds fell in love with the vacant space and was excited to transform it into the oasis for her business of hosting women's meditative healing resorts.
While she was spending time in California during the pandemic, waiting for the right moment to launch her business venture, Reynolds got a shocking phone call from a real estate broker.
The broker told Reynolds that he had sold a half-a-million dollar house that was mistakenly built on her plot of land.
A local developer, Keaau Development Partnership, bought the land and hired PJ's Construction to build about a dozen homes on the site - but the company built one on Reynolds's lot.
Reynolds, along with the construction company, the architect and others, are now being sued by the developer.

Absolutely! Furthermore, the builder should be required to not only tear down the house at his own expense, but also restore the lot to its original condition.
The builder is pro-actively suing. I think that’s normal. But they will lose. And so will the rightful owner.
My guess is that a court will issue an order forcing a sale. At 3 times (treble damages) the ACV.

I would at least look at the remaining lots and maybe choose the best one.
Last year we were off on vacation and a good neighbor called us to say that someone was doing foundation work on OUR vacant lot next door. Fixing to build.
Turns out they were parking machinery and gravel on our lot in advance of building on their correct lot.
Lawyers generally sue everyone involved to maximize the amount of return (if any).
Don’t know about Hawaii, but that would be the common law result, andunder CA law, that would be the result

It would be a shame to tear it down. SHe should get clear title to it. Either that a swap for other land of her choice.

The article states that she was offered a neighboring lot of equal value and size, but declined.
I’m wondering where I can buy an acre of empty land in Hawaii for $22k. But I’ve got all my money tied up trying to buy a little $18 million resort in Florida where the owner doesn’t like the appraisal.
