Thanks for the update. I also live nearby but rarely use the bridge.
I’m glad to hear they stopped traffic and that some tradesmen survived.
It does look like just a tragic accident.
Now we get to see sheer government incompetence on display.
It may have been dropped, but it may have been too long that it won’t matter. They won’t just STOP. Not the way reality works. There is space and time involved. It’s not a cartoon. Never mind an anchor doesn’t keep it from drifting different directions. It’d need at least 3 strategically placed anchors for that.
A President Trump would have a new bridge there in 2-3 years. Done at warp speed. He would do this for the can-do bragging rights and more.
With Dems in charge, who know if they are capable of erecting a new bridge.
Things have been done faster than people expected.
What they probably will think about is getting that water lane cleared FIRST.
Hopefully not the whole thing at once which could take far too long, but starting with a single lane that allows some smaller boats through, then work on worst debris, etc.
Shipping lanes are most important. There are other land routes. Ships and boats are trapped now, as well as commerce can’t come in.
“That bridge is where all the Hazmat traffic goes - they can’t use the two tunnels.
Also all of the Amazon traffic runs that bridge.
Major problems”
North to south traffic using I-95 will add to the already extremely congested west side of the Baltimore beltway. There should have been an interstate bypass of Baltimore and Washington built decades ago. Powerful politicos kept that from happening
Supposedly workers were fixing potholes. I suspect there are electronic signs in place to notify drivers of bridge conditions and some on the ball traffic coordinator was able to enter a message just in the nick of time.
In Democrat controlled Maryland forget about a quick rebuild. There are already politicians and lobbyists right now scheming how they can get their cut when the Key Bridge is reconstructed. You can bet there will be requirements on the percentage of minority owned firms to participate in the rebuild.
This bridge should have named the Joseph R. Biden Bridge to symbolize the collapse of the USA.
FR is a discussion forum. There is freedom of speech here. Unless you’re a retired youtube/facebook ‘fact checker’ censor. Chill out and let people speak. Same goes for Lurker.
Bkmk
The fed will use it as an example as to why we need our personal cars taken away from us. No cars, no travel, no need for a new bridge...
With Dems in charge, who know if they are capable of erecting a new bridge.
= = =
The Dems will get all excited at the word ‘erecting’.
Especially the Sec. of Trans.
“FR is a discussion forum. There is freedom of speech here.”
I love free speech. It makes idiot spotting so much easier. In this case it worked almost perfectly

Did you read i stated STOP?
I did not.
I am fully versed on calculus based physics.
I read port anchor had been dropped with small effect.
Just because you don’t THINK it will be effective does not mean you don’t proceed with impact minimizing operations.
Yes, it did.
Anchors are seldom attached to decks.
Maybe on your dingy....
The ENERGY of the motion is e = mv^2. That’s what it would take to stop the ship.
Having lived in Virginia for over 30 years, what I’ve observed is that roads are opposed because they bring development, but the development happens anyway.
Maybe they did drop it. Maybe they didn’t.
The fact is that absolutely NO ONE here knows the facts.
So speculation at this point is mental masturbation.
It’s my belief that even if they did manage to drop it the amount of force with that much mass moving that fast it wouldn’t have made much difference in the outcome.
But, unlike most Freepers, I will wait for the report to come out.
So please do feel free to go hump someone else’s leg.
Have a good day.

But thanks again for your input. Much appreciated.
I’ve been following Sal @ What’s Going on With Shipping for a while. He’s very knowledgeable. He pointed out that the port anchor WAS dropped. But that’s insufficient to stop a huge ship like this quickly. There’s just too much energy in its motion to dissipate.
