A pregnant Walgreens employee wasn’t allowed to leave work to see her doctor when she began spotting blood, according to a newly settled federal lawsuit.
Her manager refused to let her go until someone could fill in for her — but then said “she could not find a replacement for her” at the store in Alexandria, Louisiana, the lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says.
Now, Walgreens has agreed to pay $205,000 to settle the lawsuit accusing the company of pregnancy and disability discrimination, the EEOC said in a March 15 news release.
The company is required to pay the woman the full settlement amount, court documents show.
Walgreens wouldn’t reasonably accommodate her, despite how she was considered an individual with a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act — as she was pregnant with health conditions, according to the EEOC.
The woman wasn’t granted emergency leave after her doctor advised her to seek care even though “Walgreens ordinarily permits employees to leave if they are experiencing an emergency,” the lawsuit says.

“ I was thinking the same thing; why didn’t she just leave?”
Because her boss is a bully whom she’s scared of it’s the only way she can support the child
What is if with people here
Freepers don’t want her to have an abortion
They want her to just have money from no where and no imagination that she doesn’t want an abortion but she gets nothing from the father of the baby who is long gone
She’s got a bully of a boss who’s got her schmares to death she’ll have to have a baby homeless job- less
What is it?
I call BS
Why so petty?
This manager simply lacks common human decency. A pregnant woman bleeding, freaking let her go to the ER. The store can survive short 1 person.
A pregnant adult woman starts spotting, she calls 9-11 or gets in car driven by someone else. Her baby is in danger. Nothing else matters.
I didn’t see the part about her being hypoglycemic. Definitely makes a difference.
Enserio? During the Carter years, for a young couple who were just out of college and working-if they were expecting a baby, it took two incomes to be able to afford the pregnancy and a safe, decent place to live with their baby. I know all about how it was for parents of little kids then.
it is even more expensive and difficult for anyone wanting to have and provide a good life for a baby now, unless one of the parents is well off-most pregnant women who are not welfare queens can’t afford to spend more time in the kitchen if they want to have food to cook in the 1st place-apparently you don’t know any working class women-married or single...
I doubt working at Walgreens can be considered climbing the corporate ladder.
Read the court document. The woman had to walk off the job to get medical treatment.
+1
“Just $205,000? Should be millions.”
No kidding. What kind of dumbass employer would do such a thing? A baby died because of his decision and action. A baby is worth more than $205K.
That does it! Walgreens is where I have been shopping for some time. It has already gone so high I am going to have to move to local drug store.
Not exactly climbing the corporate ladder.
“The corporate ladder”? At a Walgreens store?
A woman in corporate would have the self confidence to just leave, no matter what the boss said.
This is more likely a low-level ee who is working instead of taking welfare. At that level, they really have no agency.
She did and Walgreens fired her.
“What is if with people here”
That’s a good question.
It’s true that the boss is a bully; he should be charged with negligent homicide or something. Probably a pipsqueak named Skippy with a Barney Fife complex.
“ This is more likely a low-level ee who is working instead of taking welfare. At that level, they really have no agency.”
People here so ready to condemn women for having abortions
This is what a poor unfortunate dumped by her sperm donor not having an abortion looks like
My wife started spotting blood during both pregnancies. She miscarried the first time but delivered a healthy, future Marine the next time.
Yes. Exactly.
The lack of compassion and logic here sometimes is stunning.
No matter the family situation, the fact is that a woman was in crisis, with symptoms that are associated with a baby dying. That was the only thing that mattered at that moment in time.
I really do wish the boss would be charged with something big that would see him in Graybar Hotel for a few years.
