Walgreens didn’t let pregnant worker leave and she miscarried, feds say. Company to pay

A pregnant Walgreens employee wasn’t allowed to leave work to see her doctor when she began spotting blood, according to a newly settled federal lawsuit.

Her manager refused to let her go until someone could fill in for her — but then said “she could not find a replacement for her” at the store in Alexandria, Louisiana, the lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says.

Now, Walgreens has agreed to pay $205,000 to settle the lawsuit accusing the company of pregnancy and disability discrimination, the EEOC said in a March 15 news release.

The company is required to pay the woman the full settlement amount, court documents show.

Walgreens wouldn’t reasonably accommodate her, despite how she was considered an individual with a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act — as she was pregnant with health conditions, according to the EEOC.

The woman wasn’t granted emergency leave after her doctor advised her to seek care even though “Walgreens ordinarily permits employees to leave if they are experiencing an emergency,” the lawsuit says.

Just $205,000? Should be millions.

Probably a good idea for pregnant women to spend more time in the kitchen and less time trying to ‘climb the corporate ladder’.

I assume that was an attempt at sarcasm, but it failed miserably.

All of which will go to attorneys and court costs. All of it.

Agreed, and still not adequate. If the woman was hypoglycemic, she probably didn’t have the reasoning ability to just walk out either. Our corporate structure creates a lot of out of control, power freaks in middle management trying to please the higher ups. Jesus had a parable about that in the bible and it didn’t end well.

I agree.. Not sure who her lawyer is, but you get 70k or more automatically if you break your leg in a car wreck... losing your child... definitely expect more than that.

Chances are, the miscarriage was a given.

Nevertheless, that in no way excuses by any means the store from letting her go get medical treatment. Aside from the fact that she could have ended up with uncontrollable bleeding, that is embarrassing for any woman and traumatic for a pregnant woman to go through. Any woman being pregnant knows that if you start bleeding during the pregnancy, you get medical attention ASAP.

I only skimmed the article. Poorly written as usual.

But while the company deserves a good kick in the balls, for crying out loud, my wife would have said eff off I’m going to the doctor and you will catch hell for your threats later.

Walgreens did not “stop” her from leaving - that clearly implies she was physically restrained. Who hires morons like this to write headlines?? They said she would lose her job if she left. She should have prioritized properly and then dealt with Walgreens after.

More like a struggling mom wanting to not be on welfare.

What a bizarre response to a woman suffering a loss.

The manager deserves to be terminated.

Medical emergencies are medical emergencies.

Yes, as a manager, you now have to hustle because of the shortage, so flipping hustle and power through. When COVID first hit the US, I had to hustle for a MONTH due to staff shortages.

You are having a rough shift. Big deal. Your employee could be experiencing a life-altering issue.

You don’t deserve to be in a position of authority.

The $205,000 goes to the woman who lost her baby. The Federal EEOC sponsored the lawsuit and the woman doesn’t have to reimburse them.

Walgreens will be billed for legal fees per Section J of the decree found here:

https://fingfx.thomsonreuters.com/gfx/legaldocs/mypmndgxnvr/EMPLOYMENT_WALGREENS_PREGNANCY_complaint.pdf

Reading the details of the case in the court document I’d say Walgreens done messed up real bad. That’s my scholarly opinion.

“ She’s working at Walmart

Where in the world did you get that idea from?”

Here’s the original statement you are aware of:

‘ Probably a good idea for pregnant women to spend more time in the kitchen and less time trying to ‘climb the corporate ladder’.

You think there’s a difference between Walmart and Walgreens in terms of climbing the corporate ladder and the lack thereof’

Or are you resorting to FR bullying pettiness in order to defend w
The sperm donor

She should be home or able to risk her job and have a father of the baby at the ready

Ya petty time wasting enabler

Walgreens. Ya big difference. My point is she’s not climbing the corporate ladder. She’s trying to support herself and the baby because she doesn’t have a man around who fathered the child who gives a crap beyond telling her to abort the child because he’s not taking care of either of them

That’s obvious

Petty freepers.
