Carmel is full of suburban wine women who watch the View.

If it weren’t for church and our neighborhood, we probably wouldn’t know that many people, though we don’t volunteer in the community quite as actively as we used to.

I could only stay in a Jewish community -- schools, synagogues, shopping, volunteer work. Most of them are located in the major American cities. Looks like I'm staying put for the long haul.

I know folks who live there, but I never could. It’s too suburban for me, and too liberal.

I thought once of residing in the small Illinois town of Hoopeston (the housing prices are bargains) until I learned that many major medical things require getting down to Chamnaign, Illinois (about an hour away) to get the quality care needed.

You raise a good point. I happen to live in Champaign. It is like other downstate metro areas. The hospital systems are setup to be regional healthcare sites. If you don't live too far out in the sticks, you can get stabilized care before getting shipped off to a regional medical center if necessary. Gibson City has a hospital but if you need to see a specialist, you have to drive to Champaign or Bloomington..

The only person we know in Carmel is my husband’s old boss, who is very nice. I have no idea of his political leanings at all, which is how I prefer it with most folks. I have nothing against those who enjoy living near all that “stuff”, but it’s not my cup of tea. It reminds of the kind of place where you need to look a certain way, act a certain way, drive a certain car, etc. Everything is about image and material things. That’s just not my M.O.

Yes, indeed. You scatter sugar or drop honey in a pile...you get ants. Pissants. Red ants, Black ants. I...think you get the picture.

Which part of Champaign?

I was born there. My mom went to Jr and Sr High School there. Her dad built houses around Champaign (died in 1950) and her mom continued to own an apartment building there until she died in 1984. My mom’s sister continued to live there all her adult life, and one of her daughter’s lived there all her life till she died in 2017. I have made many trips there over the years, and the last time was in 2017 shortly before my cousin died in 2017.

For five years of my childhood we lived not far from my grandmother in Champaign and often my mom would have my grandmother keep one or two of us kids at her house for awhile (my mom had 8 kids. We’d go play in the nearby West Side Park.

As a kid I never knew Chanpaign-Urbana was home to the University of Illinois. I laughed on my first visit back there as an adult when I found that out.

If I did not hate the Dim’s dominance of Illiois politics as much as they do NJ, I’d consider making a residence in Champaign. Alas, if I can, I’m considering more “red” places.

The 4 times I “visited” (the quotation marks are because I was sent by the National Guard on training) I learned I love Texans, and I really love Texas BBQ.

The weather though...not so much. 40 degrees, 80 degrees and humid, tornado warnings, hail. In one day.

I live just outside of the campus core. It is amazing how much money has been dumped into apartment high rises and complexes since the GFC mitigations provided cheap money. When I first moved to town some 30 years, the main strip into campus was a total dive. The building frenzy has been on going since you last visited in 2017...
