Mitch McConnell’s billionaire sister-in-law Angela Chao made panicked last call before dying in ‘completely submerged’ Tesla on Texas ranch: report

Angela Chao, Sen. Mitch McConnell’s billionaire sister-in-law, spent her last minutes alive frantically calling her friends for help as her Tesla slowly sank in a pond on a remote Texas ranch, according to a report.

Chao, the billionaire former CEO of dry bulk shipping giant Foremost Group, tragically died at the age of 50 on Feb. 10 after accidentally backing her car into the pond while making a three-point turn.

The driving mishap was detailed in a report by The Wall Street Journal that shed light on the chaotic rescue efforts that ultimately came up short, turning what was supposed to be a celebratory weekend with friends into a nightmare.

Chao invited several of her girlfriends from Harvard Business School to spend the weekend on a gorgeous, sprawling 900-acre private property in Texas’ Hill Country, that included horse stables, a swimming pool and a 10-bedroom guesthouse, the Journal reported.

After eating dinner together and celebrating the Chinese New Year on Friday night, Chao left the guesthouse around 11:30 p.m. to head back to the main house, where her son was sleeping. It was cold out, so she decided to take her Tesla Model X SUV for the four-minute drive rather than walk.

“Actually, an Asian friend of my wife, who was born in Taiwan, says Asian women are the worst drivers and don’t care what they do to others. I guess it is the culture, which basically sucks.”

Actually, I think it’s because they often don’t drive in their home countries and then have to learn driving as an adult, possibly at an advanced age (like all of us here, LOL).

Our son was driving a friend’s Tesla for a few days so he took us for a ride. You are so right about the acceleration. Between his lead foot and Tesla acceleration it felt like a jet taking off.

That poor soul ... to be trapped in a sinking car.

“Kyle Bass who also has a ranch in Texas posted an X message shortly after it happened, and he stated that “there is amazing video of the car violently entering the water going backwards.” What he did not say is how he knows any of that. Was it completely pitch black dark? Was it well lit? Well, the DM article says that the emergency personnel had to put up lighting. When I did a check just now, Feb. 9 was a new moon so there would have been no moonlight.”

I realize that not everything is a conspiracy theory... but this one really reeks, IMO. First, the Obama chef drowns mysteriously... and now this. It looka lika trend to me.

"Don’t think that does much good when submerged due to the water pressure acting from the outside...."

How is that scenario unique to Tesla?

"Four years ago, the 75-year-old owner of a 2006 Cadillac XLR was trapped inside of his vehicle for 14 hours after its battery died, leaving the electronic door releases inoperable. He could have immediately released himself had he known the location of the manual door release."

The inside joke here is that Miotch has been driving Cadillacs since he was hired by Marlow Cook in 1968.

I carry a Motorbuddy and have done the dry run. She did not and perished, but it had nothing to do with Tesla, and everything to do with an Asian woman in over her head...

Electric windows may work under water for a short time. But we no longer have purely electric windows. They now have electronic control systems. Those absolutely do not work as soon as they get wet. Poor a glass of water in your TV or computer and see how long it works.

The glass on Teslas is too strong to break according to this story:

“Why did she park her car so far from the gathering place?”

And what kind of a “guesthouse” is a four-minute walk away? Again, I’d love to see the layout of Mitch’s property, but for ‘some’ reason, that is being kept top secret. You know if it was concerning anyone on the right of politics vs. what Mitch really is... it’d be all over the internet by now.

See this link in hecticskeptic’s post, for ranch location:

I’m seeing articles saying that this is being investigated as a possible crime vs. the previously reported “axedent”.

I found the property details on the Blanco appraisal website.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As far as whether the doors and windows can be opened, I don’t think much different. However, there is a big difference between opening a door against the pressure of water in a submerged vehicle and atmospheric pressure.... which was the case of the “75-year-old owner of a 2006 Cadillac XLR” that you mentioned in your post.
Here is one other difference that comes to mind.... a bunch of folks have mentioned the weight of the Tesla with its EV batteries. While that is certainly a fact, it’s not the specific issue of the weight.... it’s the weight to interior car volume ratio that’s important. Obviously the higher that ratio of weight to volume, the faster it will sink since some water will always start working its way inside.
By Motorbuddy, I assume you are talking about this tool that is a hammer, seat belt cutter, glass breaker? Yup... everyone needs to have one right where it can be easily grabbed....
If she backed her car into a pond despite a back-up camera, and alert system, then she must have been drunk, or exceptionally furious at someone she’d just left, and she slammed her foot down on the gas pedal, not realizing the car was in reverse, and forgetting there was a pond behind her. According to a Freeper, the ranch belonged to her husband, so it’s not as if she hadn’t been there before.
Actually, everyone does have several glass breakers in their vehicle—they are the removable head rests on the front and back seats. The metal rods are designed as glass breakers.
I saw this on one of those videos about little known car facts
thanx for the post, would have never occured to me..
Electric windows turn cars into death traps when you are in water. It freaks me out that I can’t open the door when the ignition is on, and it isn’t in PARK.
"...so you are in an unfamiliar area..."
According to Freeper hecticskeptic in a comment to me on another thread, it's likely the ranch and property she was at, belonged to her husband:
hecticskeptic comment: "Since the taxpayer address for the JWJC ranch is the same Chicago address as Breyer’s office there, I would bet that he is the only owner of the ranch property. That’s speculation but it seems he is certainly wealthy enough to be a sole owner of it."
Jwjc Ranch, Jwcb Ranch, Lp
