New York state prison inmates would get nearly $2,600 in taxpayer-funded pocket money to make ends meet after serving just six months in the slammer in a new bill making the rounds in Albany.
The proposal from two Big Apple Democrats in the state legislature would up the amount of “gate money” given to ex-cons from the current $40 — with the money used to pay for housing, transportation and other expenses, according to the Center for Employment Opportunities, which is backing the bill.
“Every year, thousands of individuals return to our communities, often with little more than the clothes on their backs,” state Assemblyman Eddie Gibbs (D-Manhattan), the bill’s co-sponsor, said in a statement.
“This isn’t just about financial assistance,” Gibbs said. “It’s about dignity, stability, and reducing the likelihood of re-offense. By offering this support, we’re not only aiding individuals but also investing in the safety and prosperity of our communities.

They almost certainly have relatives that they could live with.
There are also places called halfway houses.
I often think about selling everything, cashing out of the system and move to a mountain home in KY or Arkansas. I’m tired of paying for all this crap then being attacked and demonized when pointing out how wrong these things are…
In 6 months they could learn a job skill.
I hear you. I’ve had enough of rewarding illegals and inmates.
That makes them prime targets for armed robbery. You know they are unarmed when they get sprung from the pen, plus they have a pocket full of cash. Just around the corner and out of sight from the prison guards.
EC
That is my plan at years end
People will commit crimes just to go to prison for six months.
GIBS-ME-DAT OTHER-PEOPLE’S-MONEY.
It’s like an out of control contagion.
How long can you stay high on $2,600?
Well, since the state prison recidivism Rate in NY is at 43%, I see this working out wonderfully
“How long can you stay high on $2,600?”
Depends on what your drug of choice is.......well, that’s what I heard
They are perfectly willing to take money from honest, law-abiding citizens and give it to criminals, thus rewarding crime and punishing honesty.
I wonder what kind of “street weapon” these criminals can obtain. Maybe the amount should be increased so they can get one that is of good quality.
Why not pay them minimum wage while in prison?
How about $2600 and bus ticket to Las Vegas?
The only solution would yo live in a camper or trailer home to avoid property tax....this is called the great money robbery of the middle class.
Actually, I thought certain inmates were already receiving a small sum of ready cash at the time of discharge. Something to help with their immediate, short term need of one way transportation to a safe residence.
Well guns are getting expensive as well as ammo. How would they go to work without the proper tools?
“There are also places called halfway houses.”
Halfway house slide...
When I was attending the U of Oregon in the late 70’s early 80’s I enrolled in a fraternity...
Our actual fraternity house (before I was there) suffered a fire and the fraternity rented a large house a block away from the frat house while it was being rebuilt (it was completely rebuilt by the time I attended university).
This house was between two existing fraternity houses so ‘we’ (they as I was not there at the time) fit right in.
After our house was repaired we returned to the original structure and the City of Eugene/state of Oregon decided that this large house that we USED to rent should become a HALFWAY house — right in the middle of fraternity row (this was, of course just after the below mentioned film was filmed)!
Would you like to see a photo of the house?
Watch Animal House. The Delta Tau Chi house (White House) is the halfway house next door to ‘Neidermeyers’ Omega Theta Pi house.
I pitied those inmates...
