A far-right candidate who has called public schools “indoctrination centers," urged people not to send their children to them and was at the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack has defeated the incumbent Tuesday in the GOP primary to run the state’s public schools.
Michele Morrow defeated incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction Catherine Truitt with 98.8% of precincts reporting. Morrow had 52.1% of the vote, compared to 47.9% for Truitt.
The winner will likely face Democrat Maurice “Mo” Green, a former superintendent of Guilford County Schools, in November. Green had 66% of the votes, compared to 24.8% for C.R. Katie Eddings and 9.2% for Kenon Crumble
Morrow's victory Tuesday is a staggering defeat for Truitt, who has guided the state through post-pandemic learning recovery and worked to change reading instruction in schools to be more research-based and has pushed for better preparing students for the workforce, college or military.
Morrow is a homeschool mom who believes schools have become too political. Morrow has been backed by rural politicians and has stayed competitive despite a massive disparity in fundraising and Truitt’s establishment support.
Truitt’s campaign has raised more than $150,000 since 2023, several times the roughly $8,000 Morrow’s campaign has raised. Truitt also counted the endorsement of prominent Republican leaders across North Carolina, including state Senate and House leaders.

Why is calling public schools “indoctrination centres” considered “far right”, forgive me?
This is not music theory, people. Phonics works.
When you’re far-Left, but think you’re a Centrist, everything else is far-Right. The Left’s thought processes are schizophrenic.
I find it curious that WRAL finds it necessary to label the “homeschool mom” as “far-right” and note that the candidate was at the Capitol on Jan 6th, like that is some sort of a capital offense. So were several hundred thousand other people.
I hate the enemedia. Manipulate, manipulate, manipulate.

"Far-right" is anyone more conservative than Karl Marx.
US public schools have been “indoctrination centers" for more than 130 years.
Traveling to DC to protest an injustice (like a stolen election) is admirable.
Far right = Patriot.
Ok, breaking finr FR tradition, I read the rest of the article. It gets worse.
Emily Walkenhorst sends so much sunshine Mo Green’s way, you’d think he should be nominated for a Nobel prize.
That’s not journalism, Mizz Emily. That’s advocacy.
I’d keep an eye out on him.
Excellent! I admit I really should have gotten to know the state legislature candidates better than I did. I was proud to vote for a couple I knew to be good and of course voted for Mark Robinson for Governor yesterday, but I left a lot of the state legislature races blank.
Bets she gets a visit from the feds and arrested for J6 now. They can’t have her win when they can interfere in the election.
I bet the Dem candidate believes in Drag Queen story hour in Pre-K...
Not only are all unionized public schools in America “indoctrination centers” sending your child to one of those today is akin to SEVERE child abuse.
