As hard as the wind was blowing at the time and as flat as that land is, I'm not that surprised. I've seen a wildfire up close and personal, and it's scary how fast they can spread in high wind.

According to THIS ARTICLE, it has become the largest wildfire we've ever had. So much destruction!

All considered, that’s a lot of acreage in a short time. Moving so fast, it’s a miracle only one person has died. At least that they know of so far. Evacuating must have been a hair-raising experience because there are only so many roads they can take.

We had one about 5 miles from here several years ago but it wasn’t nearly as large. It was plenty large enough, though, and took a little while to put out. Friends of ours almost lost their home but were lucky enough to be spared, barely.
