GOP strained by Trump-influenced shift from Reagan on Russia
The Hill ^ | 02/29/2024 | MIKE LILLIS

It’s not Ronald Reagan’s GOP anymore.

The Republican Party’s shift from Russia hawk to something softer is straining the GOP at a crucial juncture, highlighting the ascendency of former President Trump’s “America First” approach and exasperating old-guard conservatives who long for a return to the assertive foreign policy championed by the party through generations prior.

It’s created nothing short of an identity crisis for those Republicans who still identify with the party of former President Reagan, a Cold War president long lionized within the GOP ranks for his aggressive confrontations with the Soviet Union.

“Ronald Reagan would not recognize today’s GOP,” said John Conway, head of strategy for Republicans for Ukraine, a group pressing GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill to provide more military aid to Kyiv.

Indeed - a stupid premise. And a dishonest one - this is from the crowd that supported Hillary’s “Russian Reset”, thought Obama’s debate line “the 1980s are calling and they want their foreign policy back” was brilliant.

Putin was confronted aggressively by Trump - and not with Obama and Biden.

Logic is not the strong suit of this writer and the quoted commentators.

At the Detroit Convention, Reagan wanted Bob Dole as VP. But Henry Kissinger pressured for George Bush.

Bush was swamp.

Would he have locked down the country for Covid? Banned bumpstocks? Offered amnesty for a wall.. o wait. He did give big pharma immunity for anything on the childhood vax, as long as they had a surveillance system. Not a single report required for the vax deal has been completed,

Once again, are you voting for Trump or the communist?

He was soft on Russia with MAGA oil in upside down world.

Putin was openly crying for global production cuts to boost fuel prices. At the same time, Trump was Russia according to the dim bulb Dems.

We have two wars going thanks to climastescam fuel prices and these idiots are going to tell us-Trump is soft on Russia.

“It’s not Ronald Reagan’s GOP anymore.”

That’s just stoopit.

I’s no longer the McRomBushWarPigGOP-E party.
A big difference.
And very glad for it.

It’s MAGA now, Baby!

In 1980 communism was dead except in S.E. Asia?!? What an idiotic remark to make. That gas station has militarily, economically and diplomatically bi+ch slapped the West all around the world for two years now. You get the award for the two stupidest comments I’ve seen in a while.

Exactly, yet I read a post above abt Reagan not dealing with Russia while he not only dealt with Russia, he dealt with commies all over earth.

Russia GDP $2.2 trillion and entirely dependent on fuel prices.

US GDO $25.5 trillion.

He slapped his way to paying 16% for hard currency and paying 100% more for imports.

US is $200,000,000,000,000 debt/unfunded obligations, borrows at 4%.

IOW Coke pays 16% for money, Pepsi pays 4%-who wins?

Communist Soviet Union does not equal modern day Orthodox Russia. Anyone trying to paint them as the same is a fool. Anyone wanting to go to war today for the transgressions of the Soviet Union forty years ago is a dangerous imbecile.

One other thing-

everyone is a genius and a winner when markets double-

even the dimmest nitwits on earth magically turn into Einsteins.

when the tide goes out-it’s whom is left standing that counts.

leaving the real question-when MAGA oil v2.0 returns-
will comrade Vlad still be standing?

It is a reasonable question but not to folks that believe Russia is economically slapping anyone or anything.

Reagan was anti-communist and was in a Cold War with the Soviet Union.

Modern-day Russia is neither communist or the old Soviet Union. In fact, it's probably a freer country than we are under Biden.

Present day Russia has no such ability to restrict the moves of Putin.

Utter nonsense.

You seem to forget that those in Soviet Union had to go to great lengths to defect.

I can give you the names of your Russians, including critics of Putin, that are on YouTube that have left.

Enough the propaganda.
