Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Wednesday that he will step down as Republican leader in the Senate in November.

McConnell, 82, revealed his plans in an address to the Senate, where he currently serves as minority leader.

McConnell, who is the longest-serving Senate caucus leader in history, plans to keep his seat in the chamber, which he took in 1985. His current term ends in January 2027.

Good point. From Ballotpedia:

“There are 33 U.S. Senate seats up for regular election in 2024—10 seats held by Republicans, 20 held by Democrats, and three held by independents who caucus with Democrats.”

https://ballotpedia.org/United_States_Senate_elections,_2024#:~:text=Elections%20to%20the%20U.S.%20Senate,up%20for%20a%20special%20election.

Off the top of my head, looking at the map at the link, we should have good chances to flip in ME, AZ, MT, WI, MI, OH, WV, VA, NV. That’s 9, which includes two independents, Synema in AZ and King in ME.

Does he have to pick from a small group given to him BY real Republicans? Or can he choose whomever he pleases who claims to be nominally, a Republican? What I’ve read seems unclear...

The KY Gov. is required by law to select a replacement from the same party.

I’m pretty sure he has a list of Super RINOS to play with!

“ Nope. The KY Gov. is required by law to select a replacement from the same party.”

He’s just talking about stepping down as minority leader, not resigning from the Senate.

Why wait? He is now a lame duck leader. Leave and depart now. Good riddance.

Yes, this.

McConnell has had a few good moments, not many.

In 2016, Mister Obama nominated Merrick Garland to succeed Justice Scalia (who died while a member of the court) to be an associate justice. McConnell declined to hold hearings and held on until the senate term ended, thus giving Trump the ability to nom. Important, as we have since witnessed the obedient partisanship of one Mister Garland as AG.

That said, McConnell has mostly distinguished himself as a generally a squish, the very opposite of a brave and strong senate leader.

Something we should have seen coming as the way in which he flim-flammed his way out of military service during the Vietnam war. Nicely, and forever illustrates his lack of character and absence of any sense of duty.

It’s a tough job, herding cats and all the turmoil at home and abroad. I wonder who even will step up to the plate.

Exactly, and he made a point of saying just that.

Can he not assume room temp tomorrow? ‘Twould have multiple effects: increasing nations’ IQ, improving nations’ morality, and reducing nations’ number of slimeballs. The talking turd is an example of a totally failed human being who, as such, has few means to life success: crime or congress (or most probably both). Go away, turtle and die.

He probably has some contractual relationships that must be full-filled.

Nope. The KY Gov. is required by law to select a replacement from the same party.

The Republican-controlled KY Legislature passed that law just 2 or 3 years ago with the Turtle in mind. It is untested. Word is that the Dem governor would appoint a Democrat and force the Republican state legislature to fight it in court.

That’s probably not going to work. Beshear has already stated that the KY constitution gives the Governor the power, and the responsibility, of filling a vacant Senate seat, and that a mere act of the legislature can’t override the state constitution. He’s probably right about that, and it’s likely that the courts would back him up.

If the Turtle does resign from his seat, Beshear would certainly nominate his replacement, the Senate would seat the new senator, and then Beshear would take the maximum time allowed to call for a special election. McConnell has said that he intends to serve out the remainder of his term, which is the best of the available bad options.

The TURTLE has spent his entire career protecting China to the detriment of all US citizens. He’s guilty of treason.
He should be publicly flogged for his betrayal of President Trump in 2020.
And it wasn’t just Trump he betrayed, it was the entire country.
Every bad thing that’s happened since Biden was installed is the fault of ‘Chinese bitch Mitch’..
One word of doubt about the election results from McConnell in 2020 would have stopped Biden’s installation.
I hate him worse than poison.
