Poll: Almost a Third of Americans Say the First Amendment Goes 'Too Far'

According to a new poll from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE), a First Amendment organization, nearly a third of Americans, including similar numbers of Republicans and Democrats, say that the First Amendment goes "too far" in the rights it guarantees. More than half agreed that their local community should not allow a public speech that espouses a belief they find particularly offensive.

"Those results were disappointing, but not exactly surprising," said FIRE Chief Research Adviser Sean Stevens in a Tuesday press release. "Here at FIRE, we've long observed that many people who say they're concerned about free speech waver when it comes to beliefs they personally find offensive. But the best way to protect your speech in the future is to defend the right to controversial and offensive speech today."

The survey, which was conducted in partnership with the Polarization Research Lab (PRL) at Dartmouth College, asked 1,000 Americans about their opinions on free speech and expression. The survey found that "when it comes to whether people are able to freely express their views," over two-thirds of respondents said they believed America was headed in the wrong direction. Further, only 25 percent of respondents agreed that the right to free speech was "very" or "completely" secure.

How many care about random stranger’s tatoos, haircuts and piercings?

Having to point out repeatedly that uniformity and conformity are totalitarian concepts seems ridiculous on this site. Yet, I find myself doing it daily.

Americans are being conditioned to accept doing away with The First Amendment.

WOW, 5/12’s of the way to having the constitution being amended to get rid of the First Ammendant.

So the real reason immigrants are being brought in. 20 million distributed among the 3/4 of the states.

Just a bit more to go and the required number of states can amend the constitution.

I believe conservatives should have “free speech”, but liberals should not be allowed to speak at all!

Everybody likes censorship, when it’s censorship they agree with.

I knew they were going to say that once the politicians allowed them to start using “legalized” drugs for “recreational” purposes. Getting fired up on Fentanyl sure beats hiking and taking selfies at the edge of cliffs.

Good info for anyone who thinks that there is any chance, in the future, of getting some of our freedoms & liberties back...

When government indoctrination replaced the former American public school system in the 1970s, it guaranteed that G. Washington and the Founding Fathers would be reviled and replaced by Engels & Marx...

All this poll shows is how abysmally ignorant 1/3 of Americans are of our Constitution. Fortunately, about 2/3 agreed we are headed in the wrong direction.

About 1/3 of American Colonists were Tories in our Revolution. I guess some things never change.

Completely anecdotal observation here.

Of that 33% that want “curbs\limitations” on speech, what fraction of that number are women? My observation is women are more taken in by such things “free speech can go too far” then men. Women seem to want everyone to play nice even at the cost of free speech.

The above being said look how many people on this site that are hostile to free speech - meaning disagreement. This group may or not be majority women. You disagree on Trump (any candidate of the hour!) support, Ukraine-vs-Russia, Q, etc. and watch the name calling, vituperation, etc. Pick a topic many here can’t take the slightest disagreement.
