Four underwater communications cables between Saudi Arabia and Djibouti have been struck out of commission in recent months, presumably as a result of attacks by Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, according to an exclusive report in the Israeli news site Globes.
The successful targeting of the four cables, which are believed to belong to the AAE-1, Seacom, EIG, and TGN systems, marks a serious disruption of communications between Europe and Asia.
Most of the immediate harm will be absorbed by the Gulf states and India, Globes said.
The AAE-1 cable connects East Asia to Europe via Egypt, connecting China to the West through countries such as Pakistan and Qatar.
The Europe India Gateway (EIG) cable system connects southern Europe to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, the UAE, and India.
The Seacom cable connects Europe, Africa, and India, and is connected to South Africa.
The United States, United Kingdom, and allies have begun in recent months to take offensive actions against the Houthis in response to attacks, but the missile, helicopter, and underwater drone assaults on merchant ships have continued.
Well that was stupid, they just upset the money machine behind all the global unrest.
The hooothees may find out that was a bad idea.
Anyone involved, IN ANY WAY, with the destruction of ANY underseas infrastructure of a nation they are not in a declared war with is GUILTY OF TERRORISM and should be dealt with accordingly…WITHOUT EXCEPTION,
Just don’t call them the “T” word and hurt their feelings.
How exactly were they able to do this without a submarine or proper equipment?. It was reported just a couple weeks ago they had no ability to do such a thing.
They will get what communication, firepower, and supplies they need while the West's response will be hampered by the loss of our technological crutches.
If Iran can build sophisticated flying drones they are shipping to Russia, then they can build sophisticated underwater drones to take out undersea cables.
LOL !
Nuke the Hooties
True, that route goes through Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, but they could take a boat as well.
So communication and transportation is doable if they want to fight Israel and the "Great Satan" without the benefit of undersea cables.
I don’t know. The power to destroy a thing means that you control it.
Guess that means the Yemeni Freepers will not be able to post for a while... /s
A year or two ago if someone asked me about the Houthis, I woulda had an image of a goat humper on a camel, dressed like an Ewok, with a Lawrence of Arabia rifle, or maybe an AK.
Sophisticated never crossed my mind. And in the last month, they are hitting ships with missiles, survived being bombed, captured a Navy drone sub somehow, and now cut some undersea cables. And last fall they shot a missile at Israel that was intercepted in space in the first instance of “space combat”.
Exactly who the hell ARE these “Houthis” in reality?. I need to find a basic article or primer on them. Some kind of “know your enemy” kind of thing.
Getting nuts out there.
So we enter a new phase in the war. Cutting under sea cables as well as pipelines. Just another small step into WW III. The treaty with Germany and France to defend Ukraine is another. I predict an “Event” that will tug at the heart and get a declaration of war from the GOP/Prog/ Democrats. Summer war by June. Draft by July. Invasion of Russia by August. Americans will rally around Biden/Obama and reject Trump and MAGA as we go for Victory! See you at the ration lines, comrade.
The Saudis were taking care of them with weapons we sold them making us complicit. They didn’t do the job.
Remember the planeloads of cash Obama sent to Iran?
I think you’ve got the right idea, but someone is using them
as proxies in that region.
Someone is supplying them with advanced weapons.
“You swing this around. Then you pull this up. Then you
point it in the general direction you want. Then you push
this button.”
As for the cable, I’m thinking an advanced nation did it,
and the Houthis took credit.
Egypt is already against them because Suez canal revenue has dropped. They have now managed to cheese off most of the other Mohammedan countries in the area. The only saving grace is that most of these guys have weak armies.
I think they are stirring up more trouble than they can handle.
It’s Russia and China.
