Can it be a hate crime if the “victim” is a knowing and willing party?

What they were "willing" to is the question. Of course, renting to a bunch of tranny-affirming sodomites ought to be a clue. But if they rented it for a funeral, but included an orgy on the altar, that is probably provable deception.

Yeah. That is kind of my point. And it was not a case where just one person had to sign off on it either.

If this was a small church in a tiny parish where you leave a message with the cleaning lady, possible that he was deceived.

But this is one of the biggest and oldest Catholic Churches in the US. This was not a bunch of unworldly rubes who were shocked about how such a thing could be. They know who they were allowing to use their church and what would happen.

And was this person even a Catholic in good standing?

That used to be a requirement to have your funeral in a Catholic Church.
