As Putin Threatens, Despair and Hedging in Europe
NYT via Yahoo ^ | February 19th, 2024 | David E. Sanger and Steven Erlanger

MUNICH — As the leaders of the West gathered in Munich over the past three days, President Vladimir Putin had a message for them: Nothing they’ve done so far — sanctions, condemnation, attempted containment — would alter his intentions to disrupt the current world order.

Russia made its first major gain in Ukraine in nearly a year, taking the ruined city of Avdiivka, at huge human cost to both sides, the bodies littered along the roads a warning, perhaps, of a new course in the 2-year-old war. Alexei Navalny’s suspicious death in a remote Arctic prison made it ever clearer that Putin will tolerate no dissent as elections approach.

And the American discovery, disclosed in recent days, that Putin may be planning to place a nuclear weapon in space — a bomb designed to wipe out the connective tissue of global communications if Putin is pushed too far — was a potent reminder of his capacity to strike back at his adversaries with the asymmetric weapons that remain a key source of his power.

In Munich, the mood was both anxious and unmoored, as leaders faced confrontations they had not anticipated. Warnings about Putin’s possible next moves were mixed with Europe’s growing worries that it could soon be abandoned by the United States, the one power that has been at the core of its defense strategy for 75 years.

Countries are not supposed to aggressively invade other countries without a just cause. That is the post WW2 international system, or its supposed to be so.

Let this go, and bad things are going to multiply.

Whatever. But your blather — and by the way, “just cause” is not up to your eyes to determine — is totally irrelevant to the following question:

Russia is at war with Ukraine. Europe is arming and aiding Ukraine. Is that not provocation in and of itself?

Europe CAN build up a military that can defy Russia.

The problem is Euro politics, common or domestic.

The Euros political system has to adjust to take self defense seriously. Some countries have, others are getting there, others are still in denial.

They have to defy, among others, the Greens, who want to continue wasting money on green @#£%.

Its a big adjustment after decades of complacency.

The bigger problem is timing. The US has stuff, mostly, right now, in large part because the US kept its Cold War stockpiles, while the Euros will have to build much of it from scratch.

“Whatever” means that you are unwilling to go there?
But this is the heart of the matter.

And yes indeed, a “just cause” is critical. And it is our personal responsibility to determine that. That question (along with a host of others) is why St. Thomas wrote his “Summa”, to help logically and practically determine right and wrong.

Look in your heart, and look for guidance.

There may well be nothing the West can do to change the course of the Ukraine war without dragging us all into nuclear combat. I accept that. We and the rest of the West let our manufacturing capability wither due to corruption and laziness. Now our options are truly limited.

Logic is not your strong suit, is it, spaniard?

Do you not understand that how RUSSIA believes its relationship to be vis a vis Europe has NOTHING to do with YOUR opinion of “just cause”, rather, only Russia’s.

And further, do you not understand that “our personal responsibility”, my heart, your heart, etc. has NO bearing on whether Russia views Europe equipping and aiding Ukraine, and therefore worthy of attack as an enemy?

And THAT was the question upstream.

So you’re saying that America MUST risk all-out nuclear war because we MUST support Ukraine? You are one sick puppy.

We can argue about “just causes” in those cases, yes.

Call up your “Summa”, part 2 section 2 question 40

Logic is indeed my strong suit.

Truth and virtue has nothing to do with whatever fancies (Russia?) someone may have. Truth and virtue are fixed and universal as nature. We can determine Gods will through facts and reason.

>> Logic is indeed my strong suit.

Well, from your comments it doesn’t appear so.

We’re not talking “truth and virtue” yadda yadda &etc.

We’re talking whether or not Russia will nuke Yurp as a consequence of their support and aid to Ukraine.

I don’t particularly care at this point if Yurp through its stupidity gets itself nuked off the map, as Yurp is for the most part a godless satan worshipping hellhole. You, however, may care, since you live in Yurp.

What is the “just cause” of fake weapons of mass destruction ?

Wht is the “just cause” of deposing Ghadaffi, and creating a warlord / civil war / illegal immigration assembly point ?

What is the “just cause” of bombing a moslem country into being, via severing borders of a Christian country, and creating a oppressed Christian minority in that new nation? (and whatever happened to “sacrosanct borders” on that one?)
