As Putin Threatens, Despair and Hedging in Europe
NYT via Yahoo ^ | February 19th, 2024 | David E. Sanger and Steven Erlanger

MUNICH — As the leaders of the West gathered in Munich over the past three days, President Vladimir Putin had a message for them: Nothing they’ve done so far — sanctions, condemnation, attempted containment — would alter his intentions to disrupt the current world order.

Russia made its first major gain in Ukraine in nearly a year, taking the ruined city of Avdiivka, at huge human cost to both sides, the bodies littered along the roads a warning, perhaps, of a new course in the 2-year-old war. Alexei Navalny’s suspicious death in a remote Arctic prison made it ever clearer that Putin will tolerate no dissent as elections approach.

And the American discovery, disclosed in recent days, that Putin may be planning to place a nuclear weapon in space — a bomb designed to wipe out the connective tissue of global communications if Putin is pushed too far — was a potent reminder of his capacity to strike back at his adversaries with the asymmetric weapons that remain a key source of his power.

In Munich, the mood was both anxious and unmoored, as leaders faced confrontations they had not anticipated. Warnings about Putin’s possible next moves were mixed with Europe’s growing worries that it could soon be abandoned by the United States, the one power that has been at the core of its defense strategy for 75 years.

The loud, broken promise the US made to Ukraine has not only assured the destruction of Ukraine, but to the NATO alliance as well.

A bunch of dummies waving the "justice" and "feelings" flag has done great harm, and killed 10s of thousands.

We never had any real interests in Ukraine. And it makes no difference to the well being of America and Americans. In spite of the BS the do gooders and neocons spout.

If NATO collapses over this, it will be a win for Putin, and for us.

Zelensky was attending the Munich Security Conference when Avdeyevka fell. Perhaps he should have been in Ukraine tending to actual security matters.

Putin protects children from Pedophiles that are now running the West. No wonder they hate him and their controlled media organs attack him.

I’d wager that Russian infrastructure for its people is a lot more tenuous and fragile than one might normally assume. A modest investment in destroying that infrastructure on a national scale might bring so much misery that Putin’s power us threatened and his attention forced away from conducting war in Ukraine. Failed food crops on a national scale, and lasting years...
Key supply chain interruptions and disruptions, sabotage of pipelines that sell oil to China and India, over and over...
Mysterious plague-like illness outbreaks, shortages of medicines. Sunk oil tankers and other ships of all kinds. Asymmetric warfare cuts both ways. Color revolution promoted and funded within..

It sure does. Why would you think North America would be exempt from retaliation in kind ?

If only Ukraine had been an honest, democratic republic without klepto-oligarchs, it might have been worth saving.

“Zelensky was attending the Munich Security Conference when Avdeyevka fell.”

Navalny’s wife just happened to be stopping by the same conference, with a speech in hand, when Putin just happened to kill her husband. LOL!

I agree, that’s likely a HUGE FACTOR driving people to hate Putin.

Here’s a good article on the subject...has to be driving the Ukraine Cheerleaders mad!

It would not. I would wholly expect it back. Still worth it.

Prior to the last few years, I would have discounted a CIA/MI6 poisoning of Navalny. Even though the West has much more to gain from it than Putin.

But after Epstein, and after the Nordstream bombing, almost anything is possible.

You are a nihilistic retard.

What is “worth it” in the Donbass to have biological crop failures, epidemics, infrastructure destruction here in North America ?

Not only from Russia, but from retaliation from China and India, that you also apparently want to drag into this.

I’ve have another plan. Instead of World War, North America stays out of it.

It’s hard to believe that the entirety of Europe must rely on an alliance with the US to feel safe from Russia. Haven’t the events of the Russian-Ukraine War demonstrated that Russia is incapable taking any territory of note without sustaining significant losses?

If Russia were to expand its efforts (assuming there is no further provocation), what would they have to gain? They would lose the entire narrative that they simply want Ukraine as a non-NATO, neutral country and the ethnically Russian areas in the east. It would galvanize resistance against them. That being said I have no doubt that Neo-Cons want to provoke Russia into expanding its efforts.

Russia is at war with Ukraine. Europe is arming and aiding Ukraine. Is that not provocation in and of itself?
