Joy Reid...always wrong.

Slavery was not legal and never legal in most of the United States. One of the reasons the North was able to win is that they did not have slavery and thus their agriculture vastly outproduced the South’s who relied more on involuntary labor (that did not earn wages and thus did not further contribute to economic activity elsewhere) vs. paid farmhands and technological innovation. Slavery retarded economic growth where it was practiced.

“Slavery retarded economic growth where it was practiced.”

There it is. The real cause of secession. The slave states were falling behind the free states in every way and they knew it. They knew that eventually the free states were going to get such a large majority that they could vote slavery out. This “we built America” claim is nonsense.

The northern states were far wealthier than the south during the slavery era. It's not a coincidence that the financial center of the US has been New York, not Atlanta or some other southern city. Other northern cities like Boston have always had more of the largest financial institutions than the southern ones.

Further, even attributing the south's wealth in the present day to slavery is utterly moronic. What things that the slaves built are still there? I guess a few historical buildings have been preserved.

There was slavery in the northern states though the economy there was not as dependent on it as the south was.

I’m not sure northern agriculture was more productive than the south. It maybe that southern money crops were in cotton and tobacco while northern crops were more likely concentrated on wheat, barley rye and others.
Plus, you know the whole industrial might of the north and greater population thingy.

Respectfully, you are incorrect. Slavery was legal and thriving in most northern states until the 1820s when it eventually was phased out b/c factories overtook farming as money makers. And contrary to northern revisionism, the Abolitionists had little to do with the eventual end of slavery in the North. In fact, northern states made great efforts to prohibit any blacks from living in their states After they phased out.
Joy Reid is a fool. Objectively, outside of sports and entertainment, blacks have contributed far less than most demographics.
