The prime suspect in the disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann has appeared in court in Germany in a trial for unrelated sex offences.
Christian Brückner has gone on trial in Braunschweig facing three charges of rape and two of sexual abuse, dating back to between 2000 and 2017 in Portugal.
He is already serving a seven-year jail sentence for rape.
Brückner has never been charged with Madeleine McCann's disappearance.
He has denied any involvement.
Friday's public appearance was his first in court since he was named as the main suspect in the McCann case four years ago.
However, the unrelated trial in Braunschweig was immediately postponed for a week when Brückner's defence team alleged that one of the lay judges had posted radical views on social media. The posts did not involve Brückner's case.
Madeleine McCann vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz in Portugal's Algarve region, in 2007. It remains one of the highest-profile missing persons cases in the world.
Christian Brückner, 47, was identified as a suspect by German investigators in June 2020, in what they have classed as a murder inquiry. He was subsequently made an arguido, or formal suspect, by Portuguese authorities.
However no formal charges have ever been brought against Brückner in the McCann case, and the full details of the German investigation have never been released.

That remains to be seen.........................
Look at the charges he’s facing and he was in that area little wonder he’s the prime suspect
Oh, he’s more than likely the perp, but until he’s found guilty by a preponderance of the evidence, he’s just a suspect................
