Well, the weird thing is that much of the media immediately seemed to assume the woman was 'trans', based on nothing except her occasional use of the name 'Jeffrey'. So, they obviously wanted the violence attributed to a trans person.

I don't understand the motive for that.

The media routinely downplays trans violence.
I think most people were thrown off by the pictures as well. It looked like a man and the alias only confused people about what was really just an ugly woman.
