The Secretary is retaining the functions and duties of his office."efense Secretary Lloyd Austin was hospitalized on Sunday "for symptoms suggesting an emergent bladder issue," a Pentagon spokesman said in a statement.

"At this time, the Secretary is retaining the functions and duties of his office," Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon press secretary, said. "The Deputy Secretary is prepared to assume the functions and duties of the Secretary of Defense, if required

And again - is this the word from news or is this prognostication?

Incidentally, proper English writing includes defining the acronym at first usage.

Not doing so might imply the audience is a certain type, here, medical people….and even then it can be unknown for some of them unless they’re all urologists. (Yeah, I have many specialists and many of the doctors don’t know various terms or acronyms.)
