US thermal coal exports hit 5-year highs and top $5 billion in 2023
Reuters ^ | February 1, 2024 | Gavin Maguire

United States exporters of thermal coal earned more than $5 billion in 2023 as they shipped out more than 32.5 million metric tons

...

The thermal coal export earnings were the second-highest since 2017, following 2022's $5.7 billion. The total volumes were the highest since 2018 and came as U.S. power producers cut the amount of coal used in electricity generation to the lowest this century,

...

The diverging trends between shrinking domestic coal use and robust coal exports open the United States to charges of hypocrisy

....

Between 2013 and 2023, U.S. coal-fired power generation dropped by 57.5% from 1,581 terawatt hours (TWh) to 672.5 TWh

....

Over that time span, coal's share of the U.S. electricity generation mix declined from 39% to 19%

...

India was by far the largest destination for U.S. coal shipments in 2023, with the 11.8 million tons delivered there accounting for 36.3% of total U.S. thermal exports.

...

The volume shipped to India - the world's largest coal producer and consumer after China - was up 130% from 2022...

India is expected to remain a keen buyer of international coal as the country's domestic reserves are being depleted and power firms rely on coal for about 75% of India's electricity.

...

Other major destinations for U.S. thermal coal in 2023 include The Netherlands (13.4% of total), Egypt (8.5%), Morocco (6.7%) and Japan (6.0%).

China was the 6th largest buyer of U.S. coal, taking in 1.5 million tonnes, or 4.6% of the total,

...

thermal coal demand is expected to keep growing in North Africa and Asia

...

Ironically for climate trackers, any drop in U.S. shipments is unlikely to result in less overall coal consumption..

current buyers of U.S. coal will likely be forced to switch to .. Indonesia and Russia

If it’s global warming when we burn coal, but not global warming when India and China burns coal ... you might be a Democrat.

China needs the coal for energy to run factories exporting solar panels to the west. The net reduction in CO2 for all those solar panles is ZERO.

The Kyoto Treaty gave a pass to China and other communist dictators. The worst polluters.

AGW - climate change is a political argument. Not science.

Well, yes. But I think “willful stupidity” might be a better charge.

The United States has the largest reserves of coal. Attacks on coal for use as an energy source are actually attacks on the United States. It is no surprise that greenies perpetrating the anti-CO2 hoax... hate the United States. It is "par for the course". It has nothing to do with protecting nature or the well-being of others.

Something went askew in the minds of leftist intellectual leadership decades ago and over time it has lead to all sorts of bizarre conclusions and thought processes.

How else do you explain the claim that supposedly there are now 107 genders which is changing all the time...

Reuters notes the Netherlands as a destination for US coal exports, and remarks hopefully that their imports of US. coal will decline as more renewables come on line in Europe. I wouldn’t bet the farm on that happening. Energiewende is on the rocks in Germany, UK is retrenching, and many of the other states are in rebellious turmoil over the whole Great Reset.

What’s hypocritical about it? We chose to switch a lot of our coal fired power plants over to natural gas - which we also have.

Other countries have chosen to continue burning coal.

Who are we to tell anybody else they can’t burn coal? We happen to have a lot of it. They need it. Seems to me we have the basis of a deal here. What’s the problem?

China constructed 96% of the new coal-fired electricity generating plants in the whole world, in 2023.

But our govt is telling us we can’t burn NG. We have to cut back and use wind and solar. All in the name of climate emergency. Yet we sell coal to India and China who will pump the verv “toxins” into the atmosphere they claim are killing the Earth. Not hypocritical, CRIMINAL.
