A lawyer for Donald Trump on Tuesday backed off her suggestion that the judge who oversaw E. Jean Carroll's two successful civil defamation trials against the former U.S. president might have had a conflict of interest.
In a letter to U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan in Manhattan, Trump's lawyer Alina Habba said she was satisfied that the judge and Carroll's lawyer Roberta Kaplan, who is not related, did not have a "mentor-mentee relationship" when they worked at the same law firm three decades ago....
"The point of my January 29 letter was to verify whether the information contained in the New York Post article is accurate," she wrote. "Since Ms. Kaplan has now denied that there was ever a mentor-mentee relationship between herself and Your Honor, this issue has seemingly been resolved."

Consider the source...
Yes, but she has the denial in writing now. Time for some shenanigans.
She did the right thing. You don’t let questions lay...and then try to go back later. Clearing up the matter was the right thing to do.
Here are a sample of images of Tweets by this person Carroll, that were suppressed during the trial and could not be shown to the jury:
Note:These are not tweets from her to Trump. I believe these were tweets to other people that ended up with the Trump defense team.
A judge who worked at the same law firm as an attorney representing a party in a case before him should recuse himself from the case. I don’t know why Habba is backing down on this, and the denial about mentoring was not under oath. People should file an ethics complaint about the judge, and it doesn’t need to come from Trump or his lawyers.
Exactly.
She apologized “with prejudice.” She now has a denial on the record. If any info to the contrary is found to be provable she can revisit the issue. Meanwhile, the accusation is in the public domain.
Yes. This is just one aspect. There are other aspects that shout for this to be overturned.
In a normal, Legal, Republic of the Rule of Law.
And this isn’t just about Trump.
This is about Deep State sending the lawfare equivalent of a horse’s head in the bed to anyone who supports Trump and opposes Deep State.
100%.
People say Trump should be low key, but in my opinion, he should raise holy hell in every single way and forum he can, in the most vocal and over-the-top way he can,to bring this to the forefront.
Because, as you say, all of this is about a horse’s head in the bed of every single opponent of the Deep State.
Trump,is shopping for new lawyers- he made ,the announcement today I guess
If there was a mentor-mentee relationship, and Ms. Kaplan is now ON RECORD denying it, that's an easy case for overturning the case.
So, not a retreat or backpedal or anything like that.
Just a postulate put forth to test the limits of just what is driving the attempts to stack the deck yet further against Trump ever getting a fair hearing in this pretentious legal harassment.
Donald Trump is not being allowed to present any form of exculpatory evidence to the court. Their minds are made up, do not confuse them with facts.
Remind me why I should believe anything I read in the US News and World Report.
I read that the same lawyer who is representing Carroll defends Biden’s daughter,
She said she never had sex after the “supposed” encounter. I’d say she never had it before either...remember....2 divorces...no children.
> A judge who worked at the same law firm as an attorney representing a party in a case before him should recuse himself from the case. <
Right. And it doesn’t matter if it was 30 days ago or 30 years ago. Judges are supposed to be independent, and impartial. They are supposed to have no connections to either party.
Oh, well. We all know that fairness plays no part in Biden’s America.
She apologized “with prejudice.” She now has a denial on the record. If any info to the contrary is found to be provable she can revisit the issue. Meanwhile, the accusation is in the public domain.
Precisely!
Glad the hand wringers aren’t RPOTUS’ counsel.
I didn’t follow this travesty trial but...was there any valid reason given why these tweets were suppressed by the judge?
