Ask any soldier, and they'll tell you that there are fewer scarier things on a battlefield than an enemy sniper. The combination of the unknown with the actual danger elevates snipers to some of the most hated figures in warfare.
But snipers are force multipliers, more so when it comes to special operations. Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Marine Raiders, and Green Berets fight in small numbers, and the snipers within their ranks play a key role. In a team of 12-16 commandos, many will be sniper-qualified, thus maximizing the firepower of the group.
US special operations forces are now looking for a new, extreme long-range rifle for their next big fight, a possible high-intensity conflict, as the war in Ukraine has shown the damage that snipers can do, the impact they can have on the battlefield.

I would have thought drones would have had a major impact on sniper effectiveness.
Ukraine shows?
We’ve known that snipers were a force multiplier since at least the civil war. In GWOT oursnipers racked up crazy numbers. Russians on the Eastern Front did too.
Hathcock still the GOAT!
It’s involved, but if you’re stationary, you can cloak yourself to drone tech. Moving is another story.
Our ships are having a hard time defending against them. We have anti-missile systems but it's too expensive to defend against cheap drones.
Why would they need a longer range rifle when they can just use a low tech longer range drone.
The skill level of a master sniper is way higher than the skill level of a drone operator.
The drone not only does its job but also takes pictures of it while its doing its job.
A sniper can shoot for up to a mile. But the cheap drones can go several miles.
they can be pretty cheap to make.
The drone war in ukraine is shifting the way people think about everything in battle.
Both the Ukes and the Rus are using them effectively.
News Story #1) The Secret Service can no longer wear red ties, because Trump wears red ties.
News Story #2) Snipers are extremely effective at very long-range.
I understand that 16 inch guns have a pretty long range.
They could pick off cartel runners and coyotes on the US border.
nope so they can shoot preppers and rural folks that wont get with the program
Sniper could easily shoot down a drone.
Saratoga, Revolutionary War.
Yep. Know his story well. An absolute beast.
What the..? I think this has been known long before this Ukrainian cluster f***. Certainly the Russians learned it at Stalingrad and afterwards.
(Our ships are having a hard time defending against them)
Reminds me of the Nazis Battleship Bismarck trying to defend itself against the much slower British Swordfish torpedo bi-planes attacking it. Her new automatic anti-aircraft guns couldn’t zero in on them. Eventually one lucky Swordfish got off a torpedo that struck her rudder and the rest is history.
All true!
Yeah. So we need to build motherships with drones on them. New age of Naval warfare.
