Ask any soldier, and they'll tell you that there are fewer scarier things on a battlefield than an enemy sniper. The combination of the unknown with the actual danger elevates snipers to some of the most hated figures in warfare.
But snipers are force multipliers, more so when it comes to special operations. Army Rangers, Navy SEALs, Marine Raiders, and Green Berets fight in small numbers, and the snipers within their ranks play a key role. In a team of 12-16 commandos, many will be sniper-qualified, thus maximizing the firepower of the group.
US special operations forces are now looking for a new, extreme long-range rifle for their next big fight, a possible high-intensity conflict, as the war in Ukraine has shown the damage that snipers can do, the impact they can have on the battlefield.

Are there observation/targeting drones loitering over the battlefield that could target a sniper after identifying a shot from the sniper?
My thought as well.
.
Sorry, Snipers alone don’t win wars.
Dumb question. Would a good signal jamming system screw up the drones? At least screw up their GPS?
I think it would benefit the military to better train their personnel, and better utilize the weapons they have. In the right hands, a properly scoped 7.62 NATO rifle is good for way beyond 1,000 yards.
On 14 August 2014, the Army announced it was seeking sources to produce .338 Lapua armor-piercing (AP) ammunition for use in the Mk 21 PSR to effectively engage targets out to 1,500 m (1,640 yd). The main objective is for the rifle to defeat level IV body armor at 400 meters, whether suppressed or unsuppressed, in temperature ranges of −65 to 160 °F (−54 to 71 °C). Other minimum requirements include a projectile velocity of 1,340 ft/s (410 m/s) or more at 1,250 m (1,367 yd), 1,000 ft⋅lb (1,356 J) of kinetic energy at 1,500 m (1,640 yd), and the ability to defeat both 3⁄8 in (9.5 mm) of rolled homogeneous armor (RHA) and 1⁄2 in (12.7 mm) of cast iron at 800 m (875 yd).

Irony.
Snipers wreaked havoc on British officers during the revolution. So much so that if you were caught with a rifled firearm you were shot out of hand.

True, but they can start one!
I see your Simo Hayha, and raise you a Lyudmila Pavlichenko. 309 confirmed kills.

309? A piker compared with 542. With iron sights.
There was a sniper team operating in the DC area about two decades ago.
They mentioned possible radar detection as I recollect.
The sniper team was captured after their car was sighted without radar help.
Long story short, probably. The average drone being deployed in Ukraine is not insanely sophisticated with optics, but if you have a heat signature, it’s going to find you. You can conceal muzzle heat relatively easy if your shot cadence is very slow and you have supressor wraps and cloaking material. All that said, I wouldn’t want to fight in that theatre at all. Dones have obviously dramatically changed the battle space.
The Marine Corps just shut down its Scout Sniper School
That was the nature of my comment.
He is
But he’s got some legit folks right behind him.…Haya, Zaitsev, Mawhinney
Haya did it with an open sighted rifle, too
But many of those have the same gear and are just as good.
Go to a PRS match. Some legit folks at them
Nary a chance that could happen unless the drone was hovering
