You do recall correctly. McCain, the ("brat"?) son of a paternal line of notable and esteemed admirals.
The one who, it is reported, incurred a non-combat "pilot error" aircraft loss and who admitted to a year later taking out power lines to residential areas in Spain due to "my daredevil clowning around". He didn't lose that second aircraft but caused an international incident. In both cases, he did not suffer an adverse impact to his career.
There is much controversy raised by credible sources about his time as a POW, but the record is indecisive.
