Florida lawmakers advanced a bill on Wednesday that would prohibit social media platforms from allowing young teens to have an account while requiring everyone else to verify their age.
The measure prohibits anyone under 16 from creating a new social media account and requires platforms to delete existing accounts held by minors who are younger than 16. It also would require social media companies to delete any personal information from the accounts and for the platforms to use a “nongovernmental, independent, third-party not affiliated with the social media platform” to verify users’ age.
The bill passed the Florida house with a bipartisan 106-13 vote and now heads to the Republican-controlled senate.

Some people just want to you .gov on their issues to keep us ‘safe’. Repubs have forgotten decades ago the point of government.
“Unfortuanely, this bill would stop me from using ANY social media. I live in Florida.
I want my anonymity. If f/b requires me to ID myself, I AM GONE.”
Exactly right! You and 999 out of a thousand “intelligent folks”. “Social media” means everything but market places. Evrey site that has interactive discussion or comments or replies is now considered “social media”. So this means even the FR will have to join in this program to host in Florida. Or make the requirement for everyone across the board here no matter where they are. The cause and effect will DESTROY the FR!!!
I am absolutely blown away anyone would even consider this as OK. This is NOT just Facebook and Twitter!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure how you got that from what I post.
Simple question, do you support any from of government or do you support none whatsoever.
I will make it easier, as I stated, I literally believe all government is inherently bad but it is basically making the nest of the bad that we can, now where do you stand.
Also if you do knowledge a government is needed what exactly would it do?
My worldview is to limit government to the smallest proportion of society to ensure the best citizen control, as such I am a big supporter of states right.
What is your philosophy?
My philosophy is not engaging fed trash. Bye.
I suggest you look at all my posting history, you could not be more wrong.
Figuratively (and probably literally) pissing up a rope.
Good luck with that . . .
“Look at that person’s homepage.”
Holy CRAP! HYPOCRISY OFF THE CHARTS THERE!!! Not sure I have ever seen anything like that before!
Then don’t post it in a public accessible forum like the FR!
It’s a parenting issue.
Precisely
“I suggest you look at all my posting history, you could not be more wrong.”
I have never seen anything so hypocritical in my life considering the topic we are discussing... Ever... And as a webmaster and domain owner I have seen a LOT.
What is prom?
It’s ridiculous.
Ultimately yes, first and foremost it is.
Still I see it as foolish to not attempt to give parents the tools and access to hold companies accountable in this issue.
We do it with things like pron and cigarettes, and I will repeat, I see social media as at least equally as destructive to children.
As I learn more about the Fl law it seems wrongheaded in it’s approach. I have long advocated for getting the interment on unique extensions, like .gov, all pron should be on a unique extension that could easily be blocked by parents to prevent access to minors. Again not perfect but provides some means of control.
pornography = pron
Most excellent
Please explain why you hall it hypocrisy, there is a lot of argumentation through assertion happening in this thread. I have repeatedly posted my reasoning with real life examples and several here only respond with ad homonyms and assertions lacking and stated justification.
Let’s try this differently.
Do you believe laws against minors having access to pornography are government intrusion and wrong?
If you believe they are right, how are you not a hypocrite now believing there can be no government law regulating social media for minors, do you believe social media is not harmful to minors?
Earlier I had not reviewed the actual Fl law and actually do think it is worng in the approach for a list of reason, including privacy. But, I still hold minors should not have access to social media and like with pornography there could be a legislative solution to help parents.
Don’t blame social media for someone’s mental illness
“I stated a few posts ago I did not know if the Fl law was the right way of doing it”
Absolutely NOT. What you are wanting them to do here is apply China style internet control!
Perhaps make a better point, as written your post seems to imply mental illness is the only issue and social media has no impact on society.
Having raised 3 very successful children my personal experience is that when they grow up they are not equipped to deal with the world directly and all the bad actors who would decisive and abuse them.
This can lead to children doing great harm to themselves, that is not mental illness, that is children not being fully developed and emotionally mature yet.
