Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi today opened a controversial Hindu temple built on the ruins of a historical mosque in the flashpoint city of Ayodhya. The temple, which is still under construction, is dedicated to the Hindu god Lord Ram and fulfils a long-standing demand by millions of Hindus who worship the revered deity.

Congratulations to Hindus for getting their holy site back. The Muslims, as their usual practice, built a mosque on the site where an older Hindu temple stood

Why is it controversial when a church, temple, etc. is built over a mosque, but not the reverse?

That was my guess as well. Muslims do what Muslims do. Desecrate someone else’s religious sites.

Yes, the Muslims desecrated an old Hindu site when they conquered India. Good for the Indians.

If all the worshiped gods of the people of earth, which ones would be pleased and amazed with us for gathering gold, silver and precious stones into one place?

I can only imagine Jesus’s reaction to the wasteful opulence and of the Vatican and other “churches” around the world. I think he is gonna be pissed at how stupid most of us have been.

And on what ruined temple did the Mughals build their mosque? It’s hard to fathom, but the death toll in World War II pales in comparison with what Muslims inflicted during their conquest and rule of India.

Apparently, Modi considers himself so holy that he feels empowered to inagurate a major temple on his own. There were no Hindu priests in attendance, and Modi excluded pretty much everyone of significance in the Central Government, as well as the Chief Minister for the state where the temple is built. He is putting on a show for the upcoming election in March.

Needless to say, his arrogance has ticked off a huge number of people, including senior members of his own party. It remains to be seen whether this will finally be enough to put a dent in the “Modi Magic”.

Oh, and PS the new temple isn’t actually on the site of the Babri Masjid that Modi had torn down. It’s about 4km away.

I have to correct myself, the Chief Minister for the state was present, but others were not. Also, Modi’s darker half, the leader of the RSS, *was* there.

Now do Hagia Sophia and raze every mosque in the Christian world.

Pretty much everything you said was untrue. There were plenty of priests in attendance and Modi didn’t do anything on his own.

Nobody of any significance in his party is ticked off, everyone understands that he is the one most Indians vote for.

Also Modi didn’t have anyone “ tear” down the mosque, that happened in 1992. The temple is on the exact same spot, not some 4 km away that you claim.

I wasn’t going to bother with replying but I see no reason to allow a free pass for nonsense passing off as information.

What does that have to do with the article? Why are we bashing Catholics on an article about Hindus and Muslims?

Are you serious? There was a phalanx of Hindu priests. They led the consecration.

4km away is the site of the proposed mosque. The Ram Temple is exactly where it once stood, till Baburs generals tore it down and built the mosque.

If anyone in his party are piqued then it they do a damn good job of covering it up.

Stop reading the NYT and the Guardian. your bias and ignorance are on grand display.

But they've already pretty much cancelled Churchill, because of his stance on India.

Churchill did his best to preserve the British Empire, up to and including, had it been possible after 800 years of misrule, holding on to Ireland. India was the "Jewel in the (Imperial) Crown" and least of all to be given up lightly. Having struck off the binds of British colonial rule ourselves we should probably be understanding of how the Indians felt about him. He was probably the greatest political figure of the first half of the twentieth century, but in many ways an anachronism. The Last Lion.
