Yes, they do, all the time. Most politicians are not motivated as much by ideology as ego.
Most of the GOP field probably expected the lawfare to take out Trump before the primaries actually started. If that had happened they would would have absolutely been needed.
I am still not convinced that their have been enough reforms to push Trump over the margin of cheat. Several of the swing states he won the first time are pretty much off the table. He won the first time because they weren't expecting the amount of support he had.
