LAMPASAS COUNTY, Texas — The Lampasas County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that left 57-year-old William Darrell Crain dead on Thursday, Jan. 18.

The sheriff's office says it received a call at about 1:34 p.m. from 28-year-old Alex Shahan Hyatt, explaining the events that led of to the shooting.

According to the sheriff's office, Hyatt's stepfather, Crain, showed up to his home located in the 2100 block of Country Road 3790 with a nine-millimeter and a .40-caliber pistol holstered on his hip.

Hyatt told the sheriff's office that Crain had allegedly began making threats against him and his mother, who was not home at the time. Crain allegedly threatened to shoot himself and Hyatt.

According to the sheriff's office, Hyatt said he tried to deescalate the situation as he feared for his life and his mother's. Hyatt told authorities that Crain turned to the doorway and accidentally dropped the nine-millimeter pistol he had in his hand. This is when Hyatt reached into his nightstand to grab his personal handgun and fired twice at Crain, striking him in the back and armpit area.

Hyatt told the sheriff's office he then secured all of the weapons and attempted to perform life-saving measures on Crain, but he died.

According to the sheriff's office, around 1:49 p.m., deputies arrived to the scene and found Hyatt unarmed, sitting on his porch. Texas Rangers and Hamilton EMS also responded to the scene.

Sheriff's Office says Texas Rangers collected evidence at the scene and found an AR-15, shotgun rifle, 45. caliber pistol, nine-millimeter pistol, leg irons, handcuffs and enough food for a couple of weeks inside Crain's truck.

Hyatt was taken to the sheriff's office, interviewed and then released pending further investigation.

According to the sheriff's office, Crain was taken to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy. All preliminary findings are consistent with the events that Hyatt explained to authorities.

Yes, that is possible, too.

I wonder if he expected both the mom and son to be home and was thrown by the fact that mom was not there.

But Columbo would want to find out whose fingerprints were on the items found in the step dad’s truck. Since there were no witnesses to the shooting and the only re-telling of the events the authorities have is the one given by the shooter. Not so open and shut as one might think.

They are called combination guns IIRC. 2 barrels, over/under. A friend had one many years ago. 22lr/.410. Made by Savage, I think.

Could be a Savage gun, but there are five other manufacturers as well.

Thanks for making me look that up. Relearning something I'd totally forgotten made it worth getting out of bed this morning!

Part of what I really like about Free Republic is that quite often, I will learn something new, or relearn something I forgot. I try to spend at least an hour or so every day.

Lampassas is a great town just up the road from me about 30 miles. I doubt Lampassas has had a murder (or Justifiable homicide) in years.

I am not sure they know what they meant.

Many places in the article show ignorance of firearms and other things.

Not just typo’s. There are too many pointers.

Could be.

Makes a handy survival gun or something to have if you can only afford one weapon.

Called "drillings" by the Euros.

German Hammer Drillings

Quite a selection of patterns. Had never heard the Drillings term.

I've seen some really nice ones $20,000+.

Only one that I shot was a Savage .22WMR X .410.

Handy little "fill the pot" gun.

Exactly what my brother had. His was 22 hornet and 410 shotgun.

The 22 hornet is a very fast bullet, great for Coyotes.

But not nearly as good as the 22-250. My brother had one of those too.

He died 1-1/2 ago. Think his son has it, but not sure.

In Europe it is not always about money. They are very limited in some countries. They may only allow you one, single shot, hunting rifle.

That crap sucks.

Much better to have a variety.

No other place in the world has a 2nd amendment like ours.

The Left wants to eliminate it, not going to happen. Will be a war first. It is clear that the reason they want to confiscate weapons, is because of what they want to do when we are powerless we would kill them for.

Yes.

I just looked on Amazon ....

They have handcuffs and leg-irons that are “toys” for costume use, “toys” for kinky sex, and serious tools for restraining people.

Yes.

Here in southwest PA, it's deer, bear, turkey, grouse, bunnies and squirrels.

Though, lately, I've killed more varmints, incuding coyotes and raccoons.

My grandson has a girl friend who lives in PA. He and my daughter went there on a trip recently to meet her family.

My daughter and grandson live on East Coast.

I’ve not had much time to hunt in years. That does not mean I don’t know how or want to. Spent many years caring for sick or elderly family members.

But tonight I am doing a little reloading. I’ve reloaded since my childhood. But this is a new project, working on a special hand gun load. Just about tested enough to load quite a few rounds.
