New Biden guidance makes EV charger tax credits available where most Americans live

The Biden administration has offered a broad interpretation for where EV charger projects can qualify for new tax credits — making those credits available in places where about two thirds of Americans live.

Under the Democrats’ climate, tax and healthcare bill, tax credits for electric vehicle chargers are available to those who build chargers in low income communities or in areas that are not considered urban.

In new guidance announced Friday, the Biden administration offered a wide interpretation of non-urban — saying that it applied to any census tract where at least 10 percent of blocks have not been designated as urban areas.

For someone who claims “polymath” in their handle you miss a lot. First you assume that an ICE car that is replaced by an $30k EV costs $56k. You can get a 2024 Toyota Corolla for $24k. Not especially exciting or cool, but that would leave you $6k to the good at the start. Ignoring the time value of money you can buy a lot of gas for $6k.

Second you’ve finally acknowledged that the free charges at your employer are part of your compensation. Nothing wrong with that, but you do have to work to get that so they are no more free than your salary is free.

Additionally you misunderstand, probably because I didn’t explain myself properly, about the grid capacity issues I was referring to. I wasn’t referring to your 300 amp service as it is now. I was projecting what the widespread increased electrical demand would do to your ability to charge your EV. You may have 300 amp service, but the power company may and at times won’t have 300 amps to give you. A long time ago I worked in capacity planning for a major southeast power company and I can assure you that there isn’t huge amount of spare capacity in most power companies. Electricity is generated on an as needed basis and the only way to have spare capacity is to have additional generation sitting around idle until needed. Power companies’ run their cheapest generation called base load flat out these are hydro, nuclear and coal. Then come combustion turbines running on natural gas and in some cases diesel, but this is unusual. You will note that I ignored wind and solar because these are unreliable and you can’t dispatch solar on a cloudy day or wind on a calm or too windy day. Hopefully I’ve better explained what I was trying to put across about capacity. That widespread adaption of high demand machines will drop your electrical capacity drastically no matter what service you have at your house because all the available electricity will be used.

Nevertheless I support letting the market decide what type of vehicle people buy. Which means get the government’s boot off the scale with their direct and indirect subsidies to the EV industry and let the true cost out.

Oh and btw I’m not a boomer.
