The American dream is 'rapidly diminishing,' Walgreens boss says in plea to raise taxes for the wealthy

The Walgreens exec John Driscoll asked global lawmakers to tax millionaires like himself more. As it stands, the American dream is in danger of extinction, Driscoll said. Driscoll joined over 250 billionaires and millionaires in supporting the Proud to Pay More campaign. A business tycoon is taking an unexpected stance on taxes.

Walgreens Boots Alliance's executive vice president, John Driscoll, wrote a letter asking lawmakers in the US and abroad to tax the wealthy more. Driscoll echoed the pleas of entrepreneurs, an heir, and activists in his demand to save the "rapidly diminishing" American dream.

As the grandchild of Irish immigrants, Driscoll labeled himself a beneficiary of the American dream — the concept that anyone in the US can achieve success and prosperity by working hard. The exec signed an open letter from the Proud to Pay More campaign addressing the leaders gathered at Davos 2024, an annual meeting held in Switzerland that's attended by CEOs, government officials, business elites, and members of the media.

I believe in leading by example. Donald Trump did just that when he donated his presidential salary to a charitable cause. This Walgreens person is just a virtue signalling idiot on several levels.

“God bless you, Mr. Rearden!” said an old woman with a ragged shawl over her head. “Can’t you save us, Mr. Rearden? They’re eating us alive, and it’s no use fooling anybody about how it’s the rich that they’re after—do you know what’s happening to us?”

“Listen, Mr. Rearden,” said a man who looked like a factory worker, “it’s the rich who’re selling us down the river. Tell those wealthy bastards, who’re so anxious to give everything away, that when they give away their palaces, they’re giving away the skin off our backs.”

“I know it,” said Rearden.

The guilt is ours, he thought. If we who were the movers, the providers, the benefactors of mankind, were willing to let the brand of evil be stamped upon us and silently to bear punishment for our virtues — what sort of “good” did we expect to triumph in the world?” -- Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand

Really though, how do increased taxes on the rich improve the average person’s life? More contracts for political donors in an utterly corrupted system of money laundering doesn’t help at all.

A bit more detail:

Gifts to the U.S. Government

How do I make a contribution to the U.S. government?

Citizens who wish to make a general donation to the U.S. government may send contributions to a specific account called "Gifts to the United States."

This account was established in 1843 to accept gifts, such as bequests, from individuals wishing to express their patriotism to the United States. Money deposited into this account is for general use by the federal government and can be available for budget needs.

These contributions are considered an unconditional gift to the government. Citizens can make financial donations electronically through pay.gov or in paper form.

Gifts to the United States
U.S. Department of the Treasury
Reporting and Analysis Branch 2
P.O. Box 1328
Parkersburg, WV 26106-1328

Any tax-related questions regarding these contributions should be directed to the Internal Revenue Service at 800-829-1040.

I notice they don't suggest you ask your CPA or EA any tax related questions...

The top 10% of wage earners pay ~90% of all taxes in the US which is total BS. There should be one tax bracket and EVERYONE pays the exact same on every dollar earned.

Every Tax dollar collected should be used to pay for BASIC federal government necessities like the Military. Eliminate EVERY social and welfare program and every 3 letter institution.

John Driscoll needs to focus on cleaning up the crap that they call Walgreen’s. I was a customer for over 30 years but had to recently go elsewhere because they are terrible.

That’s communism

It is not up to the wealthy to support the country. They are welcome to do whatever private charitable or societal contributions they want but to depend on them to form it over to this congress? Come on

The hospitals and art institutions the churches just in NYC for instance were put up in the 18 and 1900s. The city govt didn’t do that. St pats for instance. Do people think the government built that? Of course it didn’t. It was the Irish women collecting funding and local builders and artisans. The Jewish community in NYC put together so much of the culture the architecture the museums the hospitals. Look at Mt Sandi. There are pavilions named after benefactors, Houseman, Kellenberg etc. Government takeover stifles that

The middle class is the main contributor busy far by numbers. You force them into lower class low wage earning and you’ll have less revenue.

Congress people take in $175k. They serve one year and collect that for the rest of their lives No one in a capitalist system collects that kind of grift Certainly no one with a single digit approval rating like congress. Start with eliminating that

Then stop misappropriating tax money. That is obvious. And it is obvious what is misappropriated. Anything that is not covered under the constitution

Then get the deficit down. Then talk

Does anyone think the 34 trillion that this government has psissed away can be made up by a few billionaires and their low single digit per cent after loopholes going up to even 22% that we working stiffs have to pay will put a sctratch in that?

That’s just ignorant and communist and judgemental

.

There is a special tax rate on earnings from Hedge Funds. They are not subject to the same tax rates as other earnings.
This law was add to tax code by the senior Senator from New York.

There should be one tax bracket and EVERYONE pays the exact same on every dollar earned.

Earned?

Welfare should also be taxed at the same rate.

Just as an aside, most churches only expect a 10% tithe.

Why does a secular government demand more than God almighty?

The issue with wealth in this country isn’t because there is too little taxation on the wealthy. It is a combination of mostly special first access that is given to money as it is fiat-ed into the economy, the unbalanced banking laws, and the government-directed contracts/business.

How about cut spending to only fund constitutionally mandated activities, reduce taxes by more than 50%, and include taxing the ~50% of the adult population that isn’t taxed. Everybody should have skin in the game, or they shouldn’t be allowed to vote.

Therefore, punitive taxes only serve to prevent new people from becoming wealthy and assist in keeping more people poor.

Well, they also serve to direct money into things which are not naturally viable, and to punish opponents.
