Donald Trump on Wednesday weighed in again on abortion access when asked to clarify his stance on the issue, saying he was for exceptions to bans and that it was important in order to win elections.
"We're living in a time when there has to be a little bit of a concession one way or the other," the former president and 2024 candidate said during a Fox News town hall, which he participated in instead of the latest GOP primary debate.
"You have to win elections," Trump also said. "Otherwise, you're going to be back where you were, and you can't let that ever happen again. You got to win elections." Since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the national guarantee to abortion access in 2022, it has emerged as a major political issue in various states. A number of Republican-led states have adopted restrictions on the procedure.
At the same time, voters favor Democrats over Republicans on handling abortion and in swing states like Michigan, abortion has motivated voters to turn out in important elections, polling has shown.
Trump has sought to both tout his anti-abortion record while sounding more ambivalent about sweeping bans. He's boasted of his role in the Supreme Court's decision in reversing Roe, which was a key goal of conservatives for decades, given that he named three of the justices who joined that decision.
"If it weren't for me, with Roe v. Wade, you wouldn't even be talking about this stuff," Trump said on Wednesday.
"For 54 years they were trying to get Roe v. Wade terminated, and I did it and I'm proud to have done it," he said in a quote soon seized on by rival Joe Biden's campaign.

What a shame. Trump is shifting to election mode.
Thank Morgana for your posts.
Abortion lost us the midterms
Abortion is an issue that isn’t within the purview of the federal government and should rightly be left to the states. That said, I think that the only interest the federal government should have in it that no abortions should be supported by federal funds.
Oh my gosh. Yrump should know that capitulation to the evile of abortion would be devastating. He should promote a widespread culture of life. To do so would save babies while helping Moms and Fathers alike. Shame on the Donald.
Trump is not shifting. He’s expounding on the Clinton “Rape & Incest” caveat. He’s been expressing this for a few years.
You have to win elections to change the laws. You then take the majority opinion in your state to set the limits. Then you go after their money machine, especially their illegal money machine of selling baby parts.
On this matter I think Trump has made the right call.
There are far too many people with religious, political or legal influence who do not differentiate between unrelated scenarios that most of the adult population of the USA is perfectly capable of seeing. A blanket ban on abortion even at a state level pleases the absolutists, and troubles everybody else.
- an abortion of a healthy infant without any medical, moral or social justification - which absolutely SHOULD be stopped
- a surgical or chemical procedure that removes an unborn child that’s either already dead in the womb or whose prolonged presence will kill the mom AND itself.
- cases where the mom is mentally unable to cope with the pregnancy or unable/unwilling to look after the child after its birth (especially in familial rape cases where they’d have to live with the rapist and let that rapist have access to the child). There’s no point telling those moms “don’t have an abortion” without putting viable AND COMPASSIONATE alternatives in place - trauma counselling, ante-natal and post-natal support, adoption processes that treat the mom like a valued, involved party to the child’s life rather than treating them like an agency-less disposable pariah.
- In past decades, some pregnant moms would literally rather have a backstreet abortioner stabbing them with rusty coathangers after poisoning them to get rid of the pregnancy, with a >25% chance of permanent harm if not death, than carry the baby to term. Ya think wagging a finger at them would’ve made a difference?
- If preservation of life is the moral imperative, and the medical professionals can save the pregnant mom as well as the infant she’s carrying, then of course abortion must be discouraged - but if the doctors definitely can’t save both mom and baby, they have to save the one with the greatest chance of life.
- We give our serving military personnel some acknowledgement that in a firefight they are faced with impossible choices on the spot, and no time to fully weigh up the options; we MUST acknowledge those treating an expectant mom in an emergency room may also be forced to make an impossible decision on the spot and we shouldn’t be automatically punishing them for saving mom instead of baby. (Obviously this doesn’t apply to elective abortion clinics).
huh?
I agree with that.
There are so many areas where there is common ground.
Surprising how it is the singular MOST IMPORTANT issue for many voters.

The problem is, no one has faith. I would prefer not being judged over this than winning an election. He is putting power before God.
That is what Trump should be saying. It’s a state’s rights issue. Leave it at that
Executing convicted killers or not is a state issue but letting individual people decide the killing or living of other individual people based on personal whim is not a state issue.
Plus the Federal government has to have a pro or against position on abortion for its employees and military people.
As long as Trump takes the position that abortion is a matter for the states, not the federal government, fine. I am just not sure he agrees with that.
The election was stolen.
Our republic was lost.
We have one issue.
One.
Restoration of our republic.
Until that happens all else, including abortion, IS MOOT.
I guarantee Deep State understands that very well.
This headline is too bleak and “barren” to give a good sense of what he said. He said that Reagan’s position should be the one for the GOP (eg. exceptions for the life of mother, incest, or rape). He reminded the audience that the abortion issue had come to the forefront because of the new appointees had overturned the 50 year statute.
So - let’s keep out a guy who would like to end abortion and keep giving the seats to those who consider it a right to kill as many babies as possible - riiiiight?
There’s a fantasy world and a real world - I live in the real world until such time as Jesus comes back to fix things...
Hornets nest on this one !!
