DES MOINES, Iowa, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he knows who he wants for his running mate in the 2024 race for president and that his commitment to the NATO alliance will depend on how Europeans treat the United States.

The frontrunner for the Republican nomination, Trump was asked by anchors at a live Fox News town hall who was under consideration for vice president on his ticket.

"I can't tell you that really. I mean I know who it's going to be," Trump told the gathering of Republican voters in Des Moines, Iowa, five days before that Midwestern state's first-in-the-country nominating context.

Ben Carson has gravitas and the correct instincts but IMO another post would be better for him in the 2024 cabinet. He has not shown sufficient fighting spirit in politics and I don’t see him successfully attacking the deep state. Perhaps if he gets seasoning in a cabinet position he will be ready for 2028.

Very true and well said. Especially recent converts who could see the wind blowing or rebelled against a step too far. There is a real possibility that their long held beliefs would skew their judgement left as future opportunities occur.

Trump was a Republican first and the a democrat in disgust for 5-6 years before he decided to return and take the Republican party to the America first, fiscally conservative, law & order party. His story is not remotely the same as a life long democrat who ran for & held office as a democrat for many years.

Carson is a gentleman.. In his youth, he was headed for trouble and had a temper.. Showing what you say he lacks. You are right.. And perhaps he vowed not to ever show aggressiveness. His stature is solid.. He would fight to overcome corruption. However, that fight is against a lawless limitless bunch that have no boundaries.

With God on his side.. Perhaps...

Pompeo tried his own run for president and began to denounce Trump.

Carson has the same problem as Elon Musk.

He’s smarter than everybody else

She is growing. Right in front of our eyes.

True conviction vs self interest is always difficult to gauge.

Let's face it, career politicians blow with the wind, i.e., they move in a direction they believe will benefit their career. Is it possible she is taking positions that she now believes will benefit her political career?

Roger that. A bit ashamed to say I voted for McGovern in my first presidential election. What can I say, I was young and stupid. Now I’m just old.

Whoever Trump picks better be able to win over the American voters and win 2 terms in office, or at the very least the one term following Trump’s lame duck term.

If Trump goes in as a known 1 term president and has an unelectable veep, then the left will make sure that his term will amount to nothing but plenty of noise with no enduring accomplishments.

Serious or tongue in cheek?

He was the Dr who successfully divided joined twins... When it was impossible to do.
He came from nothing and is a success. He spends his wealth sending kids who can’t afford it.. to college. He is one of the good people on earth.

I certainly have trepedations but I am not wedded to the idea of Trump's VP being the 2028 nominee. That has not happened often in our history. Trump needs to pick a solid VP and cabinet members that can showcase their skills & commitment so that there is a bench of good possibilities for 2028. Alternatively he can work closely with other figures such as senators or governors to promote those people's recognition & accomplishments.

Four sitting vice presidents have been elected president: John Adams in 1796, Thomas Jefferson in 1800, Martin Van Buren in 1836, and George H. W. Bush in 1988. Likewise, two former vice presidents have won the presidency, Richard Nixon in 1968 and Joe Biden in 2020.

You don’t put someone with such a screwed up perspective in a VP position for the Republican nomination a year or two after her latest “conversion.”

>>”She [Tulsi] has changed.”

That’s not likely, IMO. She’s a chameleon and I don’t buy her “change of heart”. Trump doesn’t need a VP to help him get elected. He’s doing that quite well on his own. If he picks someone like Tulsi, he risks picking another Mike Pence - a guy who smiles to your face and stabs you in the back. No thanks. Too much at stake to gamble with a VP Gabbard. There are better options out there.

Like Gabbard but she needs to modify her stance on Second Amendment rights.

This issue is that Trump only gets one term this go-around. This would be his second time elected as President.

Amendment 22: No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice...
