I used to send myself postcards from places I traveled too so when I got home, I would have them so I could remember what I was doing at the time. Usually sitting in some dive bar somewhere.

Great idea, gonna try that on my next trip. I sent a postcard from Istanbul to a friend, she got it 10 months later.
