Farmers across Germany on Monday began protests against the government's economic and agricultural policies, blocking roads and highways with tractors and marching through major cities.
Some signs carried by protesters and attached to tractors had messages such as "no farmer, no food, no future" and "when farmers are ruined, food has to be imported" written on them. Others called for new elections and called the coalition government "senseless" and "incompetent".
A spokesperson for the German government was not immediately available when contacted by CNBC.
Local media quoted police authorities as saying some farmers had dumped hay, animal feed and manure on roads in an effort to block them.
Farmers are protesting the government's plans to reduce or withdraw tax breaks for the agriculture sector, which were announced in late December as part of the 2024 budget.
The plans included subsidy cuts for fuel usage by farmers and tax breaks for farming vehicles which sparked anger among farmers who say this would endanger their livelihood.

Before you go to far realize that these farmers are complaining about subsidy cuts and tax increases on fuel. Not the growing fascism of the West.
Fighting an increase fuel tax is a worthy cause, especially if the fuel tax is just a means to force them to use less fuel to combat "global warming".
I don't know what their subsidy structure is. Was this done, again, to force farms to go under and consolidate to combat "global warming"?
Regardless, they fought the law and the law conceded.
It`s not about raising the fuel tax. They protest the impending end of a tax exemption for farmers.
Well, we know what the EU thinks about farming.
In other news: Germany’s constitutional court ruled in November that the government’s decision to reallocate $65.21 billion of unused emergency funds from the coronavirus pandemic for its climate and transformation fund (CTF) was unconstitutional, forcing the government to revise spending plans and tighten the purse strings.
CTF. That’s a buddy/pal slush fund if I’ve ever seen one. Not one Euro will go anywhere except to some rent seeker’s pocket.
