The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood plans to submit a proposal to the country’s health regulator this year to introduce individual donor assessment (IDA) to determine blood donor eligibility, CEO Stephen Cornelissen, MHA, said in a recent news release.

Under the “plasma pathway,” Lifeblood will remove all questions about sexual activity from the plasma donor questionnaire, allowing anyone to donate plasma for fractionation, which undergoes pathogen inactivation, if they meet all other eligibility criteria. Notably, Australia will become the first country to expand plasma donor eligibility to include donors taking pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection and donors having anal sex with new or multiple partners.

Insanity
The plasma industry already takes “donations” from very questionable miscreants, who lie for the money. This will enhance that pool considerably.
I donate a lot in the US. It gets quite annoying they constantly ask what my ‘gender’ is each time. Next time I’m going to say, “just like my blood type, it hasn’t changed’.
Tell them, “My HIV+ blood identifies as negative,” and see what they say.
Stay friendly with your family.
I was able to donate blood to my dad when he needed it.
I thought California already had.
How were you able to donate blood to your Dad?
When my dad was in the hospital and needed a blood transfusion, the hospital asked if he had any relatives that were willing to donate. I was the only one with the matching type so I went straight down to the blood donation center and donated - within a few hours, my blood (it was marked as mine) came up in a bag and hung up on his IV.
He had no reaction to it, as he’d had to other donor blood.
What year? We were told all donations go into a pool, when my hub tried to give to his friend. Maybe the trick is to fake a reaction to others blood?
Surprised the US didn’t beat them to it.
We'll likely go further than just plasma on this policy.
Imagine receiving blood components from a donor who was at a "gay rave" with a dozen anonymous partners and on meth a few nights earlier.
I would donate blood, but I happen to like being the only immortal to walk the earth.
This was 1999, in California, so things may have changed by now.
