They have and did employ effective tactics. A week or so ago four boats attacked. US vessel toasted three of them by using attack choppers at stand off distances — reaper/hellfire missiles were used. These cost ~$300K.
Three boats suck, no survivors. The fourth ran for it.

Like drones, these craft are useless in the face of personnel willing to kill. If you lack the B(&*&s for that, go back to working in a civilian office.

“the U.S. has no legal or diplomatic justification for using military assets to protect foreign civilian ships in international waters.”

************

This issue should be a high priority matter for Congress to examine and debate. But few things are high priority for them.

That event exposed a major vulnerability of USN vessels, imho.

We should protect American shipping and leave the Panama registered ships to depend on the Panama Navy to protect them.

The other alternative is to pull out entirely, and create a shipping desert. Let the countries directly involved deal with reduced shipping, and let the merchants find a safe waterway to use for commercial shipping.

Finally, the excerpt talks about OPG. Is that an acronym for "Other People's Government"?

At a minimum, I believe that it suggests our military is doing the bidding of others.

The U.S. historically and repeatedly enforced the "law of the sea" on piracy even when there was no real "law of the sea" to enforce -- but only as it related to U.S. vessels operating in international waters.

THAT should be the only precedent that would apply here. Even the U.S. Constitution distinguishes between an "Army" and a "Navy" as military forces -- because there was a very clear legal distinction between them. The Army was supposed to be comprised of state militias, and would operate within the U.S. states and territories under the authority of the Federal government in a time of war. The Navy was supposed to operate in international waters outside the legal jurisdiction of the United States but still under the authority of the Federal government.

By protecting those ships, America is rewarding their bad behavior. And by not protecting them, America is rewarding the Houthi‘s bad behavior.

It's not the job of the U.S. government to punish the bad behavior of Houthi rebels that act against the commercial interests of other countries.

It's kind of ridiculous that I have to point that out here on Free Republic, of all places. See my next post on this subject in response to another poster on this thread.

This is just a regearsal.

Soon these detonation drone boats will hold nukes from Iran, and we will not be able to immediately hold Iran responsible. They detonated 2 miles away.

Its a rehearsal. That would be close enough to use a nuke.

So your position is that the U.S. should be engaged in military action halfway around the world because PIF (and others) have some kind of God-given right to get cheap imported sh!t delivered to them by foreign companies that adamantly insist on operating outside the authority of the U.S.?

Good heavens ... this place has turned into an insane asylym.

These threads on FR are filled with the kind of globalist slop that is incompatible with any understanding of the U.S. as a free, independent and sovereign nation. It's disturbing to see so-called "conservatives" on this website who are perfectly fine with this scenario:

1. Chase many of our major manufacturing industries overseas.
2. Make large swaths of America destitute in the process.
3. Let all our international maritime shipping companies shut down and give up their business to foreign competitors.
4. Have U.S. taxpayers foot the bill for the U.S. Navy to protect Danish ships ... flying Panamanian or Liberian flags ... with crews of Filipino sailors ... delivering that cheap Chinese crap to your local Walmart and Dollar General stores.

No offense, but anyone who is comfortable with this state of affairs is a moron.

This issue should be a high priority matter for Congress to examine and debate.

It's actually been debated at length in Congress -- for years.

There is a core group of Republicans in the U.S. Senate that has blocked ratification of the current U.N. "open seas" treaty.
