SEOUL — North Korea fired more than 200 artillery rounds into the sea on Friday near a tensely defended maritime border with South Korea, a military official said, while residents of two South Korean islands were ordered to evacuate due to an unknown “situation.”
The defense ministry would not confirm if the order was prompted by the North’s artillery firing or South Korean drills in response.
However, a text message sent to residents and confirmed by an island official cited “naval fire” to be conducted by South Korean troops from 3 p.m.(0600 GMT) Friday.
An official on Yeonpyeong island, which sits just south of the disputed Northern Limit Line (NLL) sea border, said the evacuation was ordered at the request of the South Korean military.
The firing by North Korea caused no civilian or military damage in the South, South Korea’s military said in a news briefing.
“This is an act of provocation that escalates tension and threatens peace on the Korean peninsula,” a spokesman for the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

If you believe the Russians or Norks over South Korea, that’s YOUR problem.
(Source is NIS - South Korea.)
“If you believe the Russians or Norks over South Korea, that’s YOUR problem.”
The Russians and Norks haven’t said jack as far as I know, so there’s nothing to believe.
All I know is that we DISARMED South Korea.
So, again, do you have a link from a CREDIBLE source to support your claim, or do you just parrot Neocon Talking Points?
Actually, nothing happened. Kim Jung Un is merely seeking to see himself on TV
Kim is trivial nothingness presiding over a population that will die of starvation in the next 90 days
Since he OBVIOUSLY doesn’t have a credible source, it shows that he’s just another one here who sees his job as trying to convince us to believe the Western Media.
It’s sad having people on this site who, for whatever reason, feel the need to get us to believe these obviously-biased sources.
You weren’t in the military either, and no, South Korea has not lost the ability to fight because they sent everything to Europe.
“You weren’t in the military either”
Link please.
I also didn’t claim that ‘South Korea lost the ability to fight’, so please quit making up crap about other FReepers.
People have been through this charade with you before.
Why don’t you just tell us what branch you were honorably discharged from?
“Why don’t you just tell us what branch you were honorably discharged from?”
Demanding Personal Information from other FReepers is akin to posting personal information regarding other FReepers and is AGAINST THE RULES here.
As far as I’m concerned, you need a cooling off period (at a mininum).
That is the same post you make every time you try to pass yourself off as an honorably discharged military veteran and someone calls you on it.
“That is the same post you make every time you try to pass yourself off as an honorably discharged military veteran and someone calls you on it.”
Since you are UNABLE to support your claim regarding my PERSONAL HISTORY, I suggest that you refrain from making up stuff about me.
AGAIN, that is AGAINST THE RULES here and you FULLY know it.
It’ll be nothing, so long as South Korea has scrambled some ships to prevent li’l Kim’s army from invading those islands. But shooting back? Li’l Kim carefully aimed his salvos to just North of the borderline. Nothing to shoot back at. Yet.
When someone repeatedly and suspiciously claims to have served in the American military, asking what branch their honorable discharge is from is not an invasion of privacy.
What is creepy is your reaction.
“What is creepy is your reaction.”
What is ‘creepy’ is the way you continue to STALK me and make claims about me that you CANNOT BACK UP.
I have made it perfectly clear to you that my service history is MY BUSINESS and is something that I choose to NOT disclose publicly.
It’s not very hard to understand.
I have no idea if this source is “credible” or not, but I have read this in more than one place. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-67888793
I know, I’ve heard it being claimed in the Western Media, but their track record on the Ukraine War is atrocious. Anything is possible, but I’ve also heard that Russia inherited a huge supply of artillery shells, something like 17 million, from the Soviet days.
And no, I don’t have a link handy, but if it is true, they certainly wouldn’t need help from North Korea. It seems to me that the bigger problem for Russia is getting those weapons to the front lines.
Read your posts including post 15 and my post 26 to it.
That isn’t stalking it is merely normal posting, but your reaction is rather amazing.
You really don’t know that Russia has been having to get artillery shells from North Korea?
“You really don’t know that Russia has been having to get artillery shells from North Korea?”
I don’t believe that either Russia or North Korea has announced such, so I don’t have any reason to believe it’s true. After all, the West has claimed, on NUMEROUS times, that Russia is out of missiles...to the point where it’s a running joke here. So I certainly have no reason to trust Western sources.
Also, aAs I noted earlier, Russia has more than enough shells inherited from Soviet times and a far higher production capability than the West - so why would they bother to try to get shells from halfway around the world (which is basically how far North Korea is from Ukraine)?
