Why did he feel it necessary to write an op-ed? He could have let his report and testimony stand for itself.

You have to look at where he works now, who he is paid by and what government incentives he or his company might have now.

Leverage. Pictures or video. You can bank on it when someone weighs in suddenly on an important issue we all know is objectively FALSE. Why is the US spiraling into the abyss? Leverage.
