To underscore how much Iowa means to Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor was unwilling to put his campaigning there on hold even in the waning hours of 2023.
At a New Year’s Eve event in a Sheraton Hotel ballroom in West Des Moines, jeans and cowboy boots outnumbered tuxedos and cocktail dresses, and Miller Lite seemed more popular than champagne.
But the modesty of the affair, where roughly 200 people turned out for the last campaign event of the busy year in Iowa, belied its the importance to the host, who has wagered the future of his Republican bid for president on the leadoff Iowa caucuses, just two weeks away.

Early on, he seemed like a feasible choice.
Not now.
He needs to stay governor of FL and do what he was elected to do, and not turn traitor on Floridians.
Oh, DeSantis is still a viable candidate. No votes have been cast yet and the convention is seven months away. Sure, it’s Trump 24x7 at the moment, so we wait and watch.
“and not turn traitor on Floridian”
too late, he already has been for a while, much of what he signed recently as gov, will “help” FL in some ways and kick it’;s citizens in the butt soon after.
“so we wait and watch”
thanks for telling others to sit by and do nothing, it’s what has our country slipping off the edge of the cliff, lots of people who grew up thinking life is all spectator.
No Thanks pal,we need a loyal Warrior, Donald Trump
He's a card carrying member of the stupid party. He was never viable. After this stupid stunt, he will never be viable.
He needs to start rumors about Trump dropping out of the race. That tactic worked well for Cruz in 2016. /s
“That tactic worked well for Cruz in 2016. /s”
That and voter shaming letters.
There have been some posts by Iowa folks who know what is happening on the ground.
DeSantis has been running an astroturf campaign—that will become obvious soon enough.
By that nebulous yardstick, Krispy is still a viable candidate l. o. fat. l.
Desantis has a strong organization in Iowa. Seeing some of the negative adds against Ron is clear that Trump is nervous about losing Iowa again.
“Desantis has a strong organization in Iowa.”
That is a false statement by any standard.
In many rural areas he has no organization at all.
There is a reason why so many of the players abandoned ship before Iowa. They know the details you don’t know.
I know all the details. Desantis is really all in for Iowa and doing well among caucus goers.
It is two weeks away.
All the silly astroturf cheerleading will be over at that point.
It is Trump’s best interest to have DeSantis lose in Iowa, but by a surprisingly small margin.
That would keep him in the race through New Hampshire, where Haley and Sununu have built the Swamp firewall to stop Trump, and dilute their support.
After Trump wins in both locations, their campaign Swamp staffs stop getting paychecks and it all ends.
Agree with your analysis—DeSantis may barely survive Iowa but the weaknesses of his campaign will be exposed to even his most ardent supporters—fortunately NH comes up so quickly that he may not have enough time to drop out...he may just quietly tap the brakes on the campaign.
Go home Ron. It’s over.
Ron is going to make it all the way to the Florida primary where he will cruise to victory...
Oh wait.
