Navajo Nation president asks NASA to delay Moon launch over possible human remains

Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has asked NASA to delay a scheduled launch to the Moon that could include cremated remains.

Nygren says he recently learned of the Jan. 8 launch of the Vulcan Centaur carrying the Peregrine Mission One. The lander will carry some payloads from a company known to provide memorial services by shipping human cremated remains to the Moon.

Nygren wants the launch delayed and the tribe consulted immediately. He noted the Moon is sacred to numerous Indigenous cultures and that depositing human remains on it is “tantamount to desecration.”

NASA previously came under fire after the ashes of former geologist and planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker were sent to the Moon in 1998.

Then-Navajo Nation President Albert Hale said the action was a gross insensitivity to the beliefs of many Native Americans. NASA later apologized and promised to consult with tribes before authorizing any similar missions in the future.

Nygren highlighted this commitment in his letter, as well as a 2021 memo signed by the Biden administration that pledged to consult the tribe on matters that impact them.

Well, they will just have to get over it. BTW, I wonder if China and India will respect their claim on the moon?

It is a strange idea to send human remains to the moon.

I was certain this was the Bee.

They could expand on this theme arguing that the necessary environmental, historical, archaeological, groundwater, and slave trade studies had not been done.

.........all this has to do with is MONEY. NASA will give them a million bucks and the sacredness will go away.

“ It is a strange idea to send human remains to the moon.”

Yep, very odd.
What an utter waste of resources .

And the Indian resistance to it is just as foolish.

In modern American culture, we seem to be obsessed with respecting other religions.

Human remains on the moon? The Native Americans won’t like it, and their feelings are tremendously important!
Islam? You simply MUST respect Islam. If you lack enthusiasm for Islam, you are Islamophobic, and that’s about the worse thing in the world.
Hinduism? Buddhism? These are great world religions. Respect them! Take them seriously! Billions of people follow that!

Meanwhile ... Christianity? GUFFAW! Bearded guy up in the sky, right? Sitting on a cloud? What a joke! Let’s make fun of all of the gullible Christians who believe nonsense! And ... what’s that? They think abortion is important? They have doubts about homosexuality? Who the heck cares what they think about anything??? No need to give any respect to Christianity!

Their IMAGE of the Moon that they have viewed from Earth is sacred. They have never set foot on the Moon, therefore they have NO claim to it!

Of course, now and then you find yourself worshipping things that just aren't what you thought they were...
Stones worshipped by Indian villagers turn out to be dinosaur eggs
December 28, 2023
DPA International

Farmer Vesta Mandloi was surprised to learn recently that one of the "stone balls" his family had been worshipping for generations has turned out to be the fossilised egg of a giant dinosaur that lived in central India's Narmada valley millions of years ago.

Like Mandloi, many farmers of Padlya village in Madhya Pradesh's Dhar district have been worshipping these roughly palm-sized balls known locally as Kankar Bhairav or stone Shiva. The balls lie in small clusters often at the root of a fig tree in an open field and are considered the guardians of the land and livestock.

I’ve seen the way Indians (specifically Navajo, Apache, and Tigua) treat their “Sacred Land”. If they were on the moon it would be covered in trash, old trucks, and appliances.

If you watch a lot of movies then you know that in movieland there is only one true religion, one that is always portrayed as true and real, the guiding force for a people, and it never fails them while it makes them wise in all things and protects them, always, in every single movie involving them, no matter how small their role in the film.

It is the native religion of the Australian Aboriginal people.

The response is simple:
Does stopping the launch hurt any aspect of the US?
If no, then proceed; if yes, halt and pay reparations (the tribal ruling families need more money).
