Interestingly, there's some dispute about just how much of an impact the polio vaccine had on eradicating the disease.

That's because the polio vaccine was introduced almost simultaneously with two other developments that may have had a far bigger impact on eliminating the spread of the disease: (1) the adoption of uniform standards for clean drinking water in public water systems, and (2) the widespread practice of chlorinating swimming pools.
