California retirees flocking to small Idaho town, prompting concerns about 'liberal baggage': 'Wait a minute'

Retired California public employees are flocking to Idaho with their pension funds and becoming the financial "lifeblood" of at least one Idaho town, ruffling feathers with some locals who are taking issue with the "liberal baggage" of the new residents.

The Los Angeles Times reported this month the town of Eagle, Idaho, has seen an influx of retired cops and firefighters moving to their town with many of them identifying as conservative but who "seem practically socialist to the old guard" with their large pensions.

Two California transplants squared off in the most recent mayoral race, and the key issue between the two former Golden State residents was "who was the least Californian."

Being a hunter or owning firearms doesn’t make one conservative. How principled are they? How about at personal cost or otherwise inconvenience.

I’ve passed up promotions. I’ve lost hundreds of thousands, lost jobs, lost “friends”. I won’t ever bend.

Many in gov work folded like a cheap suit when covid came along. It sure showed me how few truly will do the right thing.

I’ve thought about leaving Alberta, it seems I’m on the extremist list here for simply being Christian, Ottawa has lost their minds.

Cal is ultra leftist. But my family is here. We live in Oceanside in San Diego County. San Diego has a large naval base and marine base. Lots of conservative military and retirees. Oceanside has agood police force and above average city council. Come on down, the weather is great.

The city of San Diego ruled by liberals.

I know a retired county sheriff who just built a house there, and moved from California, a month ago.
He’s as straight line Conservative as anyone, and a huge Trump supporter.
I don’t know how bad their problem is.

Nope, can’t do that.
If they move there and pay taxes there, they’re entitled to representation.

My brother lives in Montrose, CO and his newest neighbor is a retired CA fireman (that’s a conservative area of CO, but the state is a lost cause now...).

It would be interesting to know how many LEOs in CA are just waiting to retire and take their generous pensions to other states. I suspect they are a nice slice of the 818,000 that left CA in ‘21-’22.

My experience with them(city/gov workers) is that they seem to like “laws” “rules” and “services” that require more taxes imposed on property owners who pay for everyone including non property owners. They need to stay in their state and fix it instead of screwing up my state with their socialist mindset.

"Being a hunter or owning firearms doesn’t make one conservative. How principled are they? How about at personal cost or otherwise inconvenience."

They were principled to the point that they were held to a higher standard than other State employees because they wore a uniform, and if they wanted to keep their job, they had to follow the rules and regulations of the department, and the laws of the State, unlike the convicts they dealt with. They were Peace Officers who were on call, and basically on duty 24 hours a day.

They had to put up with the bureaucratic BS of the people who ran the department in Albany, NY...most of whom had never worked a day in the job, yet were telling them how to do their job, or these bureaucrats had been out of uniform for so many years, working as politically appointed stooges, they had forgotten where they came from, and spent their time dancing to the tune of the person that had appointed them, just to keep their position.

Officers and supervisors, which I was one, were told not to enforce the rules, and to look the other way when inmates violated those rules, because it would look bad to the big wigs in Albany, so we were told to stand down. There's nothing worse for morale, than telling someone in uniform not to do the job they were hired to do. If an officer wasnn't conservative when they took the job, they sure as hell became conservative not long afterward.

I've been retired 20 years. When I started the job, Democrat Hugh Carey was Governor of NY State. Mario Cuomo, who was a corrupt Governor succeeded him. I retired during Republican George Pataki's Governorship. After he completed his second term, and couldn't run again, Democrat Elliot Spitzer took the reins. Thankfully I was gone by then, so never had to work under Spitzer (who had to resign over using prostitutes), Democrat David Paterson (legally blind, and had to resign over sex allegations, and corruption), Democrat Andrew Cuomo (corrupt like his old man), and now Democrat Hochul (dumber than a box of rocks, and probably corrupt as well.) They're all Democrats, and corruption is their middle name. When you worked in uniform under pieces of crap like that, and saw how much the system changed for the worse while you were working in it, if you weren't conservative, you didn't have a brain.

At least some of the "problem" is people being judged for being "Californian". When I travel to Texas and Arizona, I frequently meet people who bash CA transplants even when the transplant is actually more conservative. Just as city folks look down on country folk and vice versa. Some folks would never accept Jim Robinson as "conservative" because he's from CA. Just another form of bigotry.

I'm not saying Californians don't export liberalism, they do. I'm saying some folks are closed minded. In places like TX and AZ, it's not so much your CA transplant neighbors that are voting liberal, it's your kids...

Eagle population is about 3k-35k. Not exactly a “small town “. And right in the middle of the ada/canyon County population center, nearly 1M now. There is no open space between Eagle and boise.

They ruined Sandpoint ID, as there isnt a property tax bond that they won’t vote for, and liberal laws, HOA etc. The regular non government workers from the industry understand this and are welcome, but the Cops ,some fire fighters, state/fed/city admin workers who were overpaid and now have a fat pension don’t seem to mind excessive taxation. Most dangerous job/careers....Roofers, fisherman, logging, farming...........

Its the property tax thats not fair. We pay for everyone. Sales tax and state income tax is fair. state tax rebate/return is not fair if you didnt work to pay into it...just like SS being given to Illegals and immigrants that never paid into it.

So what. Why should they get the benefit of another state by moving there? They cut and ran from California. Tons of people are fleeing their failed states and moving to the south or other areas. Those places are overrun with outsiders now. Migration always destroys.

California is like a cell infected with a virus. When the cell ruptures it sends millions of the virus to infect other cells who then rupture and send more virus to even more cells.
