If those wolves were already into killing livestock, they won’t stop now.

This will not end well for the ranchers.

Here is an idea: Why not lock a wolf in the chamber of each of the four lunatic Colorado Supreme Court Justices at 8 PM next Friday and then celebrate the New Year late in the morning on Tuesday, January 2?

Jared Schutz Polis sent out a Happy Kwanza tweet but did not send out a Merry Christmas tweet from the official governor tweet in what can only be described as blatant discrimination using Colorado taxpayer money.

Jared Schutz Polis’ husband Marlon Reis - the target of his vituperation is respected journalist Rachel Gabel, who is widely read in Colorado’s agricultural world and whose column appears weekly.. repeatedly, personally attacks her abilities and standing..

What evidently tripped Reis’ trigger — drawing his wrath and .. — is Gabel’s reporting that two Oregon-born wolves just released the other day in Colorado hail from a pack known to have killed livestock. He nitpicks at her presentation — without ever refuting her point.

The first gentleman is entitled to his views on animal rights. But his snark is unbecoming of his title even if the post is only ceremonial. It sure does not help the governor’s public image.

I can’t find a reference for this, but in the 1990s I read about a govt-sponsored release-into-the-wild public ceremony for some rare bird. The press and the state were all in attendance as this bird was freed. People cheered and patted themselves in the back, having successfully demonstrated govt prowess over mankind’s evil.

…and then they shrieked in horror when the released bird was attacked and killed on film by a bird-of-prey.

Govt incompetence is still in strong supply.

Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

I’ve spent many nights on the Yukon River by myself and remember The Call of the Wild (wolves howling off in the distance). So, I love wolves coming from that perspective. Indeed, wolves predate humans by millions of years.

But, were I a cattleman, I would hate them. So, clearly, it just depends on whose ox is getting gored.

I’m hoping technology will offer a solution e.g. radio collars on the wolves that would alert cattle ranchers to wolves being near their livestock. The cattle ranchers could then (perhaps) shoot the wolves with a non lethal ammunition.

Then, “do gooders” can pay into a fund that would reimburse ranchers for lost livestock. If they won’t pay into the fund, then they lose there voter registration card.

Why was it important to know whether the wolves were juveniles or yearlings? Because if the animals were this year’s pups, they wouldn’t have been old enough to have been involved in livestock depredations this year. But as it turns out, they were old enough.

It really does not matter in this case that the 4 of the wolves were actually juveniles. They were released with an adult male that would become the alpha male by default.

That male would lead the juveniles on their hunts. This male being from the pack the committed cattle predations successfully would naturally repeat this successful tactic.

I have a fundamental disagreement with any wolf re-introduction program.

Early in the last century wolfs were essentially killed off in the United States. For good reasons.

In 1974 wolves in the United States were placed on the endangered species list, when they should have been on the kill on sight list. They were endangered because man had seen to it they were hunted almost to extinction. For very valid reasons.

Canada is the country with the most wolves, and in one province alone they kill over 1200 annually. Trapping and hunting of wolves is a commercial activity in Canada.

Wolves from Canada do find their way into the United States.

Wolves have no predators in the wild other than man, and man is busy trying to earn a living growing livestock, which happens to be a food source for wolves. Ranchers have no need for wolves, any more than the general population needs wolves.

Reintro programs are slap in the face and stick in the eye of the general population and Ranchers in particular. JMHO!!!

The war on food producers also includes arson fires at processing plants.

They need to introduce some wild Cajuns into western Colorado, and in a few years there will be a proliferation of wolf meat recipes available to the general public.

Where I once lived, on a rural part of east coast, some idiot brought coyotes in to hunt.

Then they introduced wolves to the area. The problem was they looked enough alike that if you found one near your livestock, you would shoot it, but killing wolves was illegal.

So we couldn’t shoot the wolves or the coyotes.

There is a reason people shot all the wolves. They are not like nice, sweet socialized dogs, not at all!

Not a rare bird. An eagle. Steny Hoyer released an eagle into an osprey nesting area in Southern Maryland.
