Senate formally ends Tuberville blockade with confirmation of four-star generals

A 10-month blockade on the promotions of hundreds of military officers came to a formal end on Tuesday after the Senate confirmed nearly a dozen four-star generals.

The Senate confirmed the 11 nominees, among the most senior officials at the Pentagon, as lawmakers anxiously prepared to depart Washington for the Christmas recess. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who held up the promotions over the department's abortion travel policy, had insisted on time-consuming votes for each but ultimately relented.

The generals were confirmed without objection by voice vote on Tuesday evening.

Tuberville had already lifted most of his holds earlier this month, bending to pressure from Republican defense hawks considering a Democratic resolution to bypass the blockade. But he demanded that standalone votes still be held for four-star generals.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) announced the nominees would be approved this week, setting the stage for a marathon of votes — the Senate requires two votes for each promotion, one of which is procedural.

But in an anticlimactic end to the saga, Tuberville backed down from even those holds. Schumer cleared the nominees to a mostly empty chamber.

In total, more than 400 nominees were cleared this month, relieving pressure on the Pentagon after officials warned the blockade was affecting military readiness.

Tuberville had signaled earlier in the day he was open to speedy confirmation on the final 11, but Senate leaders were not sure what course Tuberville would take until Tuesday. He was absent from the chamber when Schumer called up the promotions.

Liberal take. Tuberville doesn’t back down to anyone. He got what he wanted. He won.

They wanted unanimous conset for hundreds. They got 11.

He was protesting a military policy regarding compensation for service members traveling out of state to get abortions. That hasn’t changed, I doubt that anyone is reconsidering their position on the issue as a result of this. If his goal was to bring about a change in that policy, then no, he didn’t get what he wanted.

Fun fact, we managed to win WWII with 12 full generals, though to be fair there were five five-star generals.

The chicoms will celebrate...

The world of fagots, perverts, and pedophiles will now have increased control of what is, these days, laughingly referred to as our “military”...

By my count Republicans voted 34-11 for General Charles Q. Brown, Jr., for reappointment as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and appointment in the U.S. Air Force: to be General.

I saw the roll call and that was my initial count.....there were abstentions too.

It passed 83-11, with 6 “not voting.” 4 Republicans and 2 Democrats didn’t vote.

So of 49 Republican senators, 4 didn’t vote and 11 voted nay. I think I was one off....34 voted aye.
