Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s U.K. government is studying a crackdown on social media access for children under the age of 16, including potential bans, according to people familiar with the discussions.
Ministers plans to begin a consultation as soon as January to gather evidence about the extent of potential harm to children from using social media, the people said, asking not to be named because the discussions are private.
Deliberations are at an early stage and the policy may ultimately not be pursued, the people said. While they said bans were under discussion, one of the people said they were unlikely to be included in the final plan. Another said measures like a ban or improved parental controls had not been ruled out.
Sunak’s office declined to comment.

Genie. Bottle.
Well WOW!!
I was gonna post “How do they put the genie back in the bottle?”
Good luck with that. Many of today’s children are using tablets, phones and laptops before they can walk or talk properly. Le Media are baked in the cake for most of them before 3rd Grade, unless they have parents strong enough to just say No,
Social media tax. A simple solution. You have to have a credit card to open a social media account in the UK. That’s a way to verify each person.
Do they want massive riots in the streets?
Because this is how you get massive street riots.
This is a parental rights issue.
The government has zero business telling me what quantum of social media use is “permissible” for my little DoodleBobs.
The government acts like it’s the Smartest Guy in the Room on Everything.
In reality, the essence of government is encapsulated in the New Jersey DMV. Inefficient, rude, overpriced, arrogant, long waits, and a monopoly.
That’s a good solution. Then someone will need to define Social Media, vs basic communication.
Question: Would Free Republic be considered Social Media?
A tricky line of questioning.
