The impact will be felt in Ukraine war if US aid dries up
BBC News ^ | 12th December 2023 | Jonathan Beale

Without vital US military support there is a real danger Ukraine could end up losing this war - not immediately but in the longer term.

President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Washington to spell that out, hoping that he can persuade Congress to pass a $60bn aid package that has stalled amid a row over US border security.

On Sunday, Ukraine's first lady, Olena Zelenska, warned Ukraine is in mortal danger without continuing American support.

Western officials have told the BBC they remain confident the US administration will find a way out of the current impasse. But even if President Biden succeeds, the worries about where the US stands won't go away. A presidential election year will only bring more uncertainty.

It's America, not Europe, which has provided the lion's share of military support to Ukraine.

Why is it everyone comes begging to us? And we get absolutely nothing in return but more debt?

Congress is the most inept, irresponsible, clueless, impotent, gullible, cognitively-dissonant, and ignorant group of people on the planet. And they have no idea of that fact.

Because the US has the most weapons, by far, and it doesn’t have a better use for them.

The chart does not include general financial and material assistance, which would double the total.

They could increase aid, at least financial aid. They could use that to “buy” US equipment I suppose.

Dozens of interviews and although I only heard a few, I don’t believe there was one word about the prospects of negotiating a cease-fire and peace. Are Zelensky and his WH supporter seeking WWIII????

“Why is it everyone comes begging to us?”

Because the Democrats in the US hire people are anti-Russian psychotics. Other countries, not so much.

I am in regular contact with Ukrainian friends who are 100% focused on desperately saving themselves and their sons from conscription, as the rules for deferment are changing right now.

But then I read over on this discussion forum that “pro ukrainian” people want to keep this war going to burn another 100 billion and 300,000 people (as well as removing limbs from 300,000 more).

Ugly things happen to people who speak out openly against this war in Ukraine. Ukraine is now a terror state.
No free press, no elections, tens of thousands of men systematically grabbed off the streets and thrown to their deaths. Oh yeah they also ban the dominant language and religious denomination. Fighting for our values right?

Ukraine should be holding an election in 2024. America always had an election, even during war. Lincoln in 1864, FDR in 1944, LBJ resigned in 1968.

*note LBJ didn’t resign - he decided not to run for a second term. I’m sure everyone knows that but this is a problem in other places where they do not have a functioning democracy.

I’m more concerned with the impact that unlimited, and unaccounted-for billions of dollars that have been sent to Ukraine to fight yet another proxy war with Russia, is having on this country. The only people that win anything from conducting drawn-out proxy wars are the politicians on both sides of the aisle, their family members, friends and big donors.

Clarification of an item often gotten wrong.

When the USSR dissolved, there were many nuclear weapons in Ukraine. This is always worded as “Ukraine had many nuclear weapons and gave them away in return for promises” of this or that.

This is factually incorrect. The Soviet weapons on Ukraine soil were of no use to Ukraine. They did not have the launch sequence codes. They also did not have the equipment or skillset to dismantle them. A non proliferation treaty was circulated, with global support, among the former USSR states with weapons on their soil.

The states all signed it. There was no quid pro quo or any sort of promises made or broken. Ukraine did not “give up” nuclear weapons. They never “had” them. At most, they had dangerous plutonium and uranium, with no equipment or skills to dismantle and make any use of it. They agreed, with global urging, to ship the material to Russia. Russia was doing them a favor getting that material removed from the country.

Russia was the only place in the entire world with the skillset and knowledge to deal with those specific weapons. Not even the US could deal with them. So it all went to Russia and pretty much by now all of them have been dismantled since newer weapons are far superior.

If they were smart, they should have bribed the Russians and kept 50 nuclear weapons with the launch codes but kept it a secret. Then they'll be able to aim them at St. Petersburg and Moscow.

But Ukraine was a mess after the collapse of the Soviet Union. They wouldn't have been able to do something proactive to protect their nation 30 years in the future.
