High-profile attacks on Derek Chauvin and Larry Nassar put spotlight on violence in federal prisons

Derek Chauvin was stabbed nearly two dozen times at a federal prison in Arizona. Larry Nassar was knifed repeatedly at a federal penitentiary in Florida.

The recent assaults of two high-profile federal prisoners by fellow inmates have renewed concerns about whether the crisis-plagued federal Bureau of Prisons is capable of keeping inmates safe.

In the shadow of gangster James “Whitey” Bulger’s 2018 beating death and financier Jeffrey Epstein’s 2019 suicide, the agency is again under scrutiny for failing to protect high-profile prisoners from harm.

Chauvin, 47, the ex-Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd in 2020, was assaulted Nov. 24 in the law library at a medium-security federal prison in Tucson, Arizona — the same complex where an inmate tried to shoot a visitor last year with a contraband gun.

Chauvin’s suspected attacker, an ex-gang leader, told correctional officers he would have killed him if they hadn’t responded when they did, prosecutors said. He is charged with attempted murder and was moved to a federal penitentiary next door.

Chauvin’s family is “very concerned about the facility’s capacity to protect Derek from further harm,” his lawyer, Gregory Erickson, said.

Nassar, 60, the ex-U.S. women’s gymnastics team doctor who sexually abused athletes, was ambushed in his cell on July 9 at a federal penitentiary in Coleman, Florida. Other inmates stopped his attacker before officers arrived.

Long ago, I'd heard that federal prisons were a lot safer than state prisons. And state prisons were safer than jails.

I guess that's no longer true?

Who paid the man to try to kill Chauvin?

Well, the man who did it was an FBI informant.

Uh, only to an idiot.

Prisons have always been violent. The attack on Chauvin was hired — by the same sort of folks who hired BLM/Antifa thugs to burn America in 2020. Like with the Vax, the truth on how Floyd was not murdered is coming out (i.e., folks are actually reading the court transcripts — this is not news, it was always known to be show trial). That cannot happen if these Aholes are going to continue to stay in power. Which is a dead certainty when Biden/Newsome are installed.

It’s almost laughable that prisoners have expectations they will be kept safe living among men and woman who are criminals, many violent.

I have a pal that is a county corrections officer. Said county leases space to the federal prison system. He said it gets ugly sometimes and they have one fed there and he cannot handle it. The S.O. has to step in.

“It’s almost laughable that prisoners have expectations they will be kept safe living among men and woman who are criminals, many violent.”

No it is not even funny.

if I were sentenced to prison I would not expect it to be a death sentence. I I thought it was going to be so I would argue that it was cruel and unusual punishment.

Likewise I would not expect to get raped.

People make jokes about this stuff but it is not amusing.

If you think it is either you have not really thought about it, or you might have some kind of mental issues.

If it helps you can consider that not everyone who goes to prison is actually guilty.

Ya’d THINK the level of violence alone would be a deterrent to crime, but as a law-abiding citizen - for the most part - I don’t think many criminals think beyond their immediate desires.

Something to think about for people who believe that prison violence is part of the punishment.

I find it strange that no Freeper mentioned that this police officer got steamrolled and should never have been incarcerated to begin with. In abandoning police officers to appease an ignorant knee-jerking reactionary minority crowd it just perpetuates the loss of officers where they are needed most mainly inner cities where government monies has destroyed families and ethics . I feel very sorry for officer Chauvin as he was hung out to dry under false media hyped false incitement by media and the courts.

Prisons, Fed or otherwise, keeping anyone safe?

Nope. The inmates run the place.

And Chauvin was returned to the same population after recovery. It’s pretty clear someone has put out a hit on him. And for not just one reason; his appeal is pending. (And even though death before an appeal is decided on wipes out his conviction, effectively making him not guilty, the ones funding the hit are okay with that, as long as he dies.)

Right. There is no excuse for these incarcerated people to be attacked while in custody. Being in custody is the punishment.

Google “The Fall of Minneapolis” and watch how Chauvin was railroaded by politicians and lawyers to prevent Minneapolis from being destroyed and to pacify BLM. Chauvin DID NOT murder thug George Floyd.

I watched events unfold as did so many others here. I agree Chauvin was railroaded. If he makes it out alive it will be a miracle. :(
