To take Odessa the Russians would have to move a large force to Kherson, make an opposed crossing of a major river, and then drive a few hundred miles behind enemy lines to take the city. The Russians have not demonstrated any sort of capacity to do that since the start of the war.
This was expected. The Russians know that the West has a ‘sweet spot’ for them regarding timeline - which is the time between exhaustion of weapons available for Ukraine, and significant increases in Western arms production capability, as requirements for production in West are onerous (including, now, quotas regarding Drag Queen participation on production lines, and in higher level management positions).
So the weapons for Ukraine are now exhausted and Russia has about a year before there is a significant ramp-up in production (after all, there are only so many Drag Queens to go around). Hence this is the time for them to push forward and conclude this operation.

That’s a Neocon Dream at this point - to freeze the conflict - and then IMMEDIATELY put what’s left of Ukraine into NATO.
If Ukraine has basically nothing left to fight with, it’s hard to see how Russia will settle for anything less than a permanent solution to the problem.
And the two things that will be non-negotiable will be a demilitarized Ukraine (including no NATO, obviously) and a denazified Ukraine. It will have to be up to Ukraine and the West to convince Russia that they’re serious this time, or Russia will keep moving West, and may well wind up parceling out Ukraine to other countries if they have no other option to put an end to their threat.
At least that’s my take.
It certainly is disheartening to see some conservatives so broken and defeated that they are easily manipulated into giving aid and comfort to mass murdering KGB Kremlin filth. We’re better than that. Or we use to be, anyway.
I hope no matter the shortage of us supply that Ukrainian assassins kill many Russian troops occupying their country.

Even the “future production increases” by the West are basically a joke compared to what Russia is already doing.
