One of North Carolina's most influential Republicans is endorsing Bill Graham for governor in 2024, a strong rebuke of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the GOP frontrunner.
In an interview with a conservative magazine, U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis — a Republican who has served in Congress since 2015 and before that was Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives — said Robinson lacks the experience needed to be governor of one of the biggest states in the nation.
“Mark Robinson’s a good enough guy. I don’t know him that well,” Tillis told the National Review in an interview Friday. “But he has virtually no legislative experience, very little business experience. We’re a very, very important state and we have to have people with that kind of experience, I think, to continue this track record that we’ve had since Republicans took control of North Carolina when I became speaker. And so for those reasons, I’ve decided to support Bill.”
Jordan Shaw, a Tillis political consultant who is also working as spokesman for Graham’s campaign, confirmed the endorsement for WRAL. Graham’s campaign manager Alex Baltzegar told WRAL Graham was grateful for Tillis’ endorsement.
“Bill Graham is laser-focused on winning a conservative future for North Carolina and is building a coalition of supporters from all swaths of the Republican Party,” he said. “Bill really appreciates Sen. Thom Tillis's support and is ready to prosecute the case against Joe Biden and the Democrats' failed record on the economy, crime, and education.”

Tillis is right in that Robinson lacks experience. His main appeal is that he’s black. But I and almost everyone I know will vote for him, Tillis be damned.
The treasurer is a wonderful salt of the earth person. I wish he could win.
Dale Folwell, NC treasurer is salt of the earth and honest as the day is long. We need more like him.
I hereby declare that I am snubbing Tillis.
Kinda reminds me of Bill Simon running for Calif. governor on his father’s name. He was worse than Dan Quayle.
You would think a Lt. Governor is qualified to move up a step. I would accuse Tillis of being a closet racist. Robinson could very well lose. It’s under the radar but our party has a problem voting for blacks.
Duplicitous, conniving, back stabbing RINO jackass. Tillis is an elitist, deal making jerk whose reputation in North Carolina is in the toilet. He can’t possibly stop Mark Robinson from becoming the state’s next governor.
Me too.
I wrote a letter to Tillis after the 2020 election (before the certifications were complete) informing him that if he did not fight the fraud that was occurring he would NEVER have another vote from me. One of his lackey staffers eventually responded with a garbage “we need to follow the process and rule of law” reply. He did nothing. He continues to do nothing.
Like all the RINO do-nothings who declared Trump inexperienced and unfit, so to they speak of Robinson. One man with common sense in the office of Governor will be light years ahead of Cooper, Purdue, Hunt, and all the other s.
Screw Tillis. I’ve twice held my nose and voted for him. It ain’t easy.
We don’t want experience. We want people who don’t cave to narratives.
Deep Staters gotta deep state.
Bovine excrement.
“Robinson could very well lose. It’s under the radar but our party has a problem voting for blacks.”
Yes he could easily lose next year. And that problem you mention seemed to be quite true in Kentucky a month ago.
Sorry, Tillis, I’m going to get my friends in NC to vote Robinson. Graham, might be as Conservative as Robinson is, however, I think Robinson would be better.
Same problem here in KY, and so we're still stuck with a white rat guv in a state that's +30R.
I remain skeptical about ALL politicians in that regard, no matter how they manage to present themselves.
Walker was a perfect candidate...but zero experience.
Don;t be stupid......
We have GOT to get rid of Tom Tillis. I voted for him ahead of Jody Cunningham the Democrat nominee....but after I saw how much the RINOs betrayed us in 2020, I swore that would be the absolute last time I ever vote for a RINO. I damn well mean it.
Two comments on the article.
In the beginning it cites an unnamed conservative magazine as the source. Interesting that the electronic news media is even looking at such publications. It later refers to the National Review but never says it was the source of the primary information.
There is a lot more of the article than what was posted and most of it is political minutia to NC. They did not reference the democrats in the race until the last paragraph.
There you go again, and contradict yourself yet again in your own statement - he's the Lt. Governor. He's obviously already been elected previously.
Of course if the Democrats pour in tens of millions of dollars and the conservative base again sits on their behinds and keeps their wallets closed, Robinson will indeed lose without even a fighting chance. North Carolina is not a state adverse to electing Democrats...the current Dem governor defeated a Republican incumbent - and that was in a Republican-leaning year for the state...so an underfunded candidate not able to run a full campaign or respond to attacks is certainly not going to be a position to win.
